Example:
left bracket key does nothing. (turn retrograde)
apostrophe key does nothing. (orbit normal -)
right shift + F1 switches to external camera view. (right MFD select)

I cannot find the file that allows for key assignments. I read in the orbiter log that some changes were made to this that may affect some keyboards. If this is the case, is there any way to correct this?

Which kind of keyboard do you use? Orbiter works over scan codes, so the keyboard actual layout is not important, but the location of the key on the keyboard.

Right Shift + F1 for example also only works when there is an active MFD on the right side.

It is a standard HP keyboard that came with my HP computer. The MFD was active. The L Shift + F1 works on the left side. The right bracket "]" turns prograde but the left bracket "[" for retrograde does nothing. Also, the semi colon ";" turns orbit normal +, and the apostrophe " ' " key for orbit normal - does nothing. So far, all other keys are good.

Does the HP keyboard have any special keys?

I think this little tool might help you:

I can imagine HP using some sort of dirty dirty homebrewn keyboard driver that messes with the codes...

You can be sure - it is very likely the additional keys mess up the scan codes by using cheaper electronics instead of using the higher scan code numbers.

I tried a different keyboard (Compaq with no special keys) and still, the same keys do not work. It doesn't matter wich vessel I try. I have to switch to the clear screen cockpit to click on a button to change the right MFD or to turn antinormal or retrograde.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Have you checked the keyboard driver? You might try to replace it with a standard driver.

Might also be that HP ****ed the keyboard controller on the board. In this case a USB keyboard might help.

Or you have an HP application running that assigns those keys and sits between orbiter and the driver.

Problem Solved!

I looked in Device Manager and under Human Interface, there were four devices listed as keyboards. HP keyboard, Infrared tranceiver, remote controller and MIC. These are all input devices. So, rather than fight with trying to reconfigure or mess something up, I just dedicated another computer (without all the bells and whistles) to Orbiter. Everything works the way it should and the skies are blue again.

Thanks to all, for steering me to a solution.

Thanks HP. You really ****ed up.
Happy Orbiting TeddyJohn

Dang. I've just set up orbiter on our new HP laptop and was impressed with the framerates (at least compared to old klunker I had been using), then I noticed the right-shift problem.

When I found this thread I thought I had hit gold, but no fix. Unfortunately I don't have the option of switching to another PC for orbiter :(

Sympoms: Right-shift F1 acts like F1, retrograde and orbit normal - don't do anything. Other right-shift key commands also appear to fail (can only control the right MFD with a mouse). This is on the laptop keyboard as well as a USB keyboard plugged into the laptop. OS is vista 64 bit premium.

My laptop doesn't have extra keys on the kb, but it does have the "soft touch" row of controls at the top (volume, mute, dvd playback controls, etc.).

The orbit control keys I can live without, but the right MFD controls are killing me. I am used to constantly toggling through both MFDs to monitor status and can't stand leaving the keboard, especially during high-intensity maneuvers (launch, rentry, etc.)

I'll post if I find a fix.

PS anybody want to buy a slightly used HP DV5t? :P

I can confirm this as well - just set up Orbiter on a new HP DV3510NR, Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I have identical symptoms with the Keyboard - Right Shift, left bracket, and apostrophe are not recognized, either using the onboard Keyboard or a USB keyboard.

I've experimented with killing some of the HP background processes related to the touch-sensitive media keys, all to no avail.

Could it be a 64-bit issue?

I'll post if I figure out how to fix this.

I hope this isn't considered a necropost. The message said, "Please do not necropost in old threads (more than 30 days since the last post) unless you are adding relevant information to it.

Since this thread is completely relevant to my problem, it seemed better to add to the existing thread rather than start a new one about the same topic.

I have the exact problem these other people are talking about. I've lived with the problem for an entire year, but it's starting to bug me quite a bit lately.

Pressing ] works just fine to go prograde. Pressing [ does nothing.
Pressing ; works for Orbit-Normal (+). Pressing ' does nothing.
Left side shift works to select different MFD options. Right side shift does not select MFD options.

I have an HP Pavilion dv7t-3000 running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

I found this image online that shows what my keyboard looks like.

The guy who started this thread solved his problem by switching to a different computer. That's not a practical solution in my case.

From the sounds of things, I'm just going to have to live with it. But I thought I'd see if anyone has any new thoughts on the topic.

P.S. Is it possible to open the retro doors with a keyboard command? I've looked through keymap2006.cfg and I can't find an option for it.

If you open your Windows Control Panel and go to "keybaords and input methods," then choose "change keyboards..." what shows up as the primary keyboard? It should be English (United States)...

Seems to be correct:
