Iron Hill Project Thread

Okay guys, if it is released, it may go down as the smallest vessel package ever released on Orbithangar, my ShuttleDUtilSat (Ill come up with a better name later). Please let me know if the package is working. You obviously will need UCGO is you havent caught on earlier

Wow, that's fantastic! I only wish I could zoom in closer so I could read the text:)

Yeah I downloaded the biggest copy they had, but I had to open it in Paint.Net, Windows photo viewer couldnt handle it. Now that I have a map, we can start planning our traverses for the B-mission. I havent done any geological prep work, but the feature marked Bach at about 70S 100 LON (not sure which direction) looks very unusual. if the double ring structure indicates a really massive impact event, a traverse there would be very usefull for getting mercurian crust samples. Downside is that its around quadruple the distance scopas is from chao-meng fu, so we would need to do a very long drive, maybe 2 parts both ways, to get there.

Can we use my utility vessel?

Scopas is about 4 and a half hours from Chao. That makes Bach about an 18-hour drive!
Yes, definitely use the utility vessel. Either that or fly Discovery there...at 300 m/s, that would take about an hour:)

I was thinking a 2-3 part drive to Bach, with ~10 hour stops in between. I think it would take a fair bit of coffee to manage 18 hours straight . As far as flying Discovery, Id prefer not to have to mave her any more than we have to, as Ive found arrow freighters very twitchy to control while landing.

I started work on the Discovery ship yesterday, & it should be ready soon. I also think I found an option for the lift in one of gattispilots new projects. Will advise as things move along :tiphat:

MISSION COMPLETE! Now We're doing some research with the computer, and in some minutes we're going to sleep. The landscape is AWESOME!

It sure is:) I thought the view of that huge cliff on your left as you leave Chao-Meng-Fu is incredible:thumbup:

Are you going to wait until we get back to Iron Hill, to post the latest state?

---------- Post added at 06:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:27 AM ----------

During the first two weeks of October, we will do the Longevity and Tenacity missions. These are closer to home, so RickD will be driving. Also, the sun will be up by the 20th (although not far enough up to cook us:lol:), so we're going to have a spectacular view when we depart for Earth:)

What about the return to the Odyssey? Am I going to drive it, or are you planning to do this trip?

I guess I can drive us on the return trip:)
We'll head back tomorrow morning;)

We are on our way back to Iron Hill:)
Will post again when we get there.

We're BAAAACK:)
The crew arrived safely at Iron Hill around 16:45 UTC.

On the way back, we followed a long, narrow valley, with a series of tiger-stripe-like structures stretching across our path. The sun is starting to come up, backlighting the cliffs on either side. For such a barren planet, it was a breathtaking sight.

Mercury is magnificent desolation like Buzz Aldrin never dreamed of.

Sounds nice . If I may ask as Im getting my IHP orbiter install set up, what values did you input to world studio for the various craters in the mission?

Umm...I didn't. I just enabled Orulex, and there everything was:shrug:

How is there a crater at Chao-Meng fu or Scopas? unless theres some secret set of mercury heighmaps I havent been able to find, Orulex just uses procedural generation to create randomized terrain for planets. If thats the case, there shouldnt be any recognizeable craters in the sim for us to travel to.

I wouldn't have thought so either, but I can show you a screenshot if you like...

A overhead view of chao meng fu would be good. By the way, I posted another update in my dev thread about the Shuttle-D. I added basic life support :woohoo:

huh. do you have a Chao-Meng-Fu base (ie a config file under mercury/base) in your orbiter install? I just wanted to make sure we were looking at the same terrain, but Id bet Orulex just plopped down a standard crater for every base you put in. Thanya :tiphat:
