for those that dont know the only bugs i have found in this is that when you mont and use the rcs thrusters the only direction that they fire is straight out they dont fire in any of the other four directions (unless i missed something) also if you look in the config files at where it has the name of the image for the preview of the parts it is misspelled on some of the names after checking each item i found that _r2 is the only part that has to be fixed by removing _r2 from the name you fix the problem and you then get the images in preview please let me know of how to fix my rcs problem so i can fly the ship

It's been a long while...

I wish I could say it was worth the wait, but the current patch took about 10 minutes of looking at the code and about half an hour of testing. The rest of the last three months was spent perpetually working up the energy to look at the code, and losing it again before building up enough.

Needless to say, this doesn't bode very well for the future of the project.

I really hope that this is now pretty much it as far as this version is concerned (it's certainly not all the bugs, but I hope there aren't any gamebrakers in it anymore), and that I can devote the times I get around to actually doing something with my spare time to IMS2. I am not very optimistic that this will be a lot of times, because currently family life is really tough. Probably one of the toughest times I've gone through in my life. I knew I wasn't exactly a family guy to begin with, but it seems I still overestimated myself quite a bit when I decided to have kids, and of course there's the little detail of the double delivery...

I hope it will get better, but any progress in the near future will probably be sporadic.

Can we migrate the IMS2 code to Github or something similar? If PeterRoss, you and I were all working partialy on it, we could probably get a fair bit done.

No worries about the family stuff Jedidia, we all understand. For what its worth, I think you will do just fine as a daddy

i'm not sure github would be the best option, what with it only working with git...

i actually planned to make a repository, but then got distracted by retrofitting all the new, now stable stuff to ims for half a year or so...

next priority is a usable interface, i'm currently unwrapping the code from orbiter galaxy to the bare bones irrlicht -thread-in-an-orbiter-window to get started with a visual point and click docking stack editor.

i think i'll release the code for the bare-bones irrlicht implementation just for the kicks, to see if anyone else can think of crazy stuff to do with a fully functional d3d9 engine running inside orbiter... :shifty:

Anyone able to reproduce this, by the way? I didn't change anything at all in the RCS code since several versions back (before the release candidates, so... erm... more than a year ago??).

Paradineai, could you post a scenario with the vessel that produces this problem?

be warned it's slow moving even if you just use main engines the smaller set is for backup in case of main engine failure

here is my ship

Ah, a finalised vessel... that's already valuable information. Just in case, do you still have a scenario around from right before you finalised it?

can you tell me what i did wrong

Not yet, give me a bit. Chances are, I did something wrong :shifty:

Thanks Orb for adding code tags!

Paradineai, I really like your explorer. I think you're the first with this kind of wheel configuration, and it looks really cool!

Also, the RCS is working flawlessly for me. It's just a heavy bird and takes a long time to turn (people get often staggered by that fact after getting used to delta gliders which have for RCS what normal rockets have for main engines... :shifty:). Push the time acceleration to 10 times and you should notice your vessel turn in the direction you are firing.

Don't get fooled by the visuals: The "exhaust flame" is spherical and originates at the center of the thruster, so it will look exactly the same no matter which way you're thrusting. This was a limitation by the original IMS code and I didn't consider it important enough to spend several hours to remove...

Just make sure all your RCS thrusters are activated in the RCS menu, and you're good to go!

 You and your fetish for big IMS ships. ;)

Well, your sig says you're tired of monkeys.. not HUMONGOUS IMS ships. ;)

BTW, I'm starting to fly a few more missions of my Lunar Station construction project. I'm up to mission 109....

thanks that's all i needed to know (no i deleted after it loaded correctly) also how do i get the boosters to attach and fire (they go on the 4 towers just behind the wheels and to the sides of the tanks) also i thought up the design for the wheels because I'm using this as a platform to test some possible landing craft (no atmo of course) but if you think about it you don't thrust all the time so it don't matter how the wheels are placed so long they are stopped for thrusting. also i thought that you would like to know that on the iss as well as all other stations that have been built by NASA ALL of the modules have battery backup even if its only for lights so i made some small adjustments to the cfg (batterycapacity = [0.1% of input power as a standard] files to allow for this.

ps I'm a retired us marine and am currently employed by NASA for design and modeling so i have a lot of stuff that i would like to try and this ims/orbiter system really helps (i just really suck at programing) and asking the original designers of the programs is always better than trying to decompile and fix yourself because then you both learn what happened and how to fix the problem so that it doesn't happen in real life.

pss we are currently working on a way to try to launch multiple modules on one rocket or for less money (while doing it faster) so that we can build a larger station (aka crew of 10 to 15 instead of 3 to 7) also while having the ability to have some sort of wheel attached somewhere on the station for sleeping and eating quarters (i was thinking about building it inside a disk type hub that is pressurized so that it doesn't have any moving parts exposed to space [which in turn eliminates the possibility of leaking seals] and creates a large area to mount other items to in the future. do you think that you can make a mesh and config for this for me (it would be about the same size as the wheel i used on the explorer [to show it spinning it would have windows or lights that chase each other like a train on a track] and it would only have 2 docks [like the wheel that i used] also it would have capacity for 8 crew and have a hydroponics area inside [food = 4])

thanks in advance

Any chance of some screen captures of this ship?

I made a screen cap, here it is. Interesting design indeed:

(EDIT: It reminds me the old Ring Wars game. Difference is the rings there were particle accelerators and not centrifuge habs.)

By the way, there's buggy animation of solar module:

picture.php

also i thought that you would like to know that on the iss as well as all other stations that have been built by NASA ALL of the modules have battery backup even if its only for lights so i made some small adjustments to the cfg (batterycapacity = [0.1% of input power as a standard] files to allow for this.

I came up with the same idea at some point, all of my latest custom modules have batteries.

i was thinking about building it inside a disk type hub that is pressurized so that it doesn't have any moving parts exposed to space [which in turn eliminates the possibility of leaking seals] and creates a large area to mount other items to in the future. do you think that you can make a mesh and config for this for me (it would be about the same size as the wheel i used on the explorer [to show it spinning it would have windows or lights that chase each other like a train on a track] and it would only have 2 docks [like the wheel that i used] also it would have capacity for 8 crew and have a hydroponics area inside [food = 4])

I can do that. The idea is cool, but how do you intend to bring it to orbit? Also, question to Jedidia: can we have a centrifuge consisting of a core module only, I mean - without attachments? If it is possible, the centrifuge can be made as a single module. If it is not, I'd rather make a half-shell module capable of covering the already existing centrifuge from both sides.

Boosters are attached like any other module, but cannot be integrated. You can control them through the Boosters MFC: http://orbiter-forum.com/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=248

Boosters

From here you can control any boosters you might have attached. Every page lists up to four boosters. If you have more than four you can browse through the pages with the selection bar at the top of the MFC. The boosters will have a symbol signifying their status: Blue is ready, yellow is armed, red is burning and red with an X is depleted. You can arm and disarm boosters by clicking on them in the list. "Ignite" at the bottom of the MFC will fire all currently armed boosters (not only those on the current page). "Cut" will cut all currently burning boosters. "drop dep." drops all depleted boosters.

By the way Jedidia, the "Black Hole Bug" still happens when I'm firing the boosters. I only had time to test it with vessels already made with RC6. Just in order to know if I did something wrong, is it supposed to be solved with RC7?

Hmmm... afraid not. Crew capacity is a property of a habitation modules and command modules and can't be added to other module types.

By the way, there's buggy animation of solar module:

Huh? reproducable with any other vessel?

Boosters are attached like any other module

Well, a finalised vessel doesn't have the docking ports in place anymore, so you can't use the scenario editor to attach them, because that can't handle attachment points...

By the way Jedidia, the "Black Hole Bug" still happens when I'm firing the boosters.

It's not supposed to be fixed, since I completely forgott what it is... :shifty:

Yes thats right, I added attachment points manually in the integrated vessels cfg.

No repro on odd solar panel behavior with explorer...

The booster problem reproduces very reliably, however. I wonder when that crept in exactly, they were working once upon a time.

---------- Post added at 12:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:41 AM ----------

Code:
+ force	{data=0x009ffdfc x=-1.#IND000000000000 y=-1.#IND000000000000 ...}	VECTOR3

Well, it's at least not astonishing that the universe goes to hell... each booster is thrusting with non-numerical thrust

The cause of this is that the thrust vector of the boosters gets returned as 0,0,0 which of course leads to trouble when rotating into the local frame. Why the thrust vector is invalid I don't yet currently know...

---------- Post added at 12:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:11 PM ----------

Ok, just another problem in the event cue: The boosters were checked at running, but orbiter didn't get around to actually starting their engines yet. As a result, they return 0 thrust in the first iteration. Fixed by putting in a saveguard to abort the calculation when GetThrustVector returns a vector with length 0.

Will upload the fix somewhen today.

we would construct it in space with a temporary living center (old external fuel tank from shuttles with air lock) attached via trusses and a few solar arrays

---------- Post added at 09:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:50 AM ----------

i forgot to close all the solar arrays before finalizing the ship and that may be why the solar array looks off but if you close them, quicksave, close, and load the quicksave then when you open the solar arrays it should look right (i have had the same problem with other modules if you spawn the ships with stuff open then you get 2 or 3 visual bugs [most fix themselves after a few seconds {sometimes minutes}])

Interesting... didn't ever notice that. Might be prudent to save everything as closed by default for finalised vessels. Would be more logical, anyways.

thanks for this system again. but i am having problems with the ships that i built in rc6 not loading in rc7 (i hope they work in rc8) also I'm planing a reman of explorer so that it will have 5 rcs at each point to allow for faster turning (although it wouldn't be a good thing in real life because the ship would just pull apart at the connections between modules). i'm also looking to put some side mount engines on the front of the ship to use for retro thrust (it will help with docking to stations and other larger ships). my remake will end up being explorer2 and may even be a bit larger than before.

i was wondering if it could be done so that the finalized vessel could be a dll of its own to save hd space and allow for higher frame rates due to lower ram needs. also i was wanting to add to the ucgo iss cfg file to make it a supply station for construction uses (because it's already in most scn to start with [or someone can make a version of it using rc8 and add the lines for ucgo supply])
