When I play the mission to land on Phobos with DGIV, I aim at the base and ten stop when I am very close, level and then let myself to softly fall.
But stopping implies that I am firing a stream of hot gas against the base.
What would be a realistic way to land on Phobos without burning the base and without using external view?

First of all hot gas is pretty relative. RCS should not be a serious problem.

Next, I just do a normal rendezvous, as if Phobos is a space station. Usually, this means that you are most of the time pointing the exhaust away from Phobos.

Stop firing about 50m above the base. Then drift down. At 0.17m/s2 you won't crash badly. It's a regular space rendezvous, as Urwumpe says.

whenever im landing there i never use the main or the hover when i get clos enough to do any damage to the base. the rcs have more than enough power to give you a very soft landing which can be done with no external view
