Yuri Gagarin. Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (Russian: Ю́рий Алексе́евич Гага́рин; IPA:; 9 March 1934 – 27 March 1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.

57 years ago today this amazing man started off manned space flight!

An example to us all as he started our quest to the stars

That's Valentina Tereshkova, who was described by Kamanin (head of the cosmonaut training center) as "Gagarin in a skirt" during the selection process for Vostok 6.

I recommend the movie Gagarin: First in Space for a nice dramatization of events. Enough hardware shown and reasonably accurate.

Well, I think he's a footballer, so will be laughing all the way to the bank!

The bust of Gagarin looks quite good, just lost its way with the plinth. I think it would
look ok with it on a shelf, part way up the monolith?
