Updates ExoMars News & Updates

ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter has recently detected significant quantities of iron, magnesium and aluminium, located beneath Mawrth Vallis, on the northern hemisphere of Mars. This discovery was possible thanks to the Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS), which was able to distinguish these elements under the superficial rusty layer of iron oxides, the main components of the martian surface.

Mawrth Vallis is located in direct vicinity of Oxia Planum, where the Rosalind Franklin rover is expected to land in 2028. Scientists suspect that in a distant past, Mawrth Vallis was an outflow channel, where liquid water flowed.
