Just clear some things up: MEX only recorded the carrier signal, not the actual telemetry. That was left up to TGO. MRO is the first chance for actual telemetry post-landing.

Earth recieved signal stopped half-way during the atmospheric portion of the descent. Same with the available data from the Mars Express....

Mars Express signal showed same break in @ESA_EDM carrier signal at same time as Pune. Not good, but need to see @ESA_TGO data to diagnose.

I'm actually just catching up to this mission and was wondering about the science mission of Schiaparelli - if it is in the vicinity of Opportunity, what is interesting in that particular locale that cannot be examined by Opportunity? Or is the lander a technology test bed?

The team cannot still confirm if EDM has crash-landed. No data received is the reason.
