ESA to recruit new European astronauts.

I'm not even European, I have no academic credentials and my only real qualifications are a bunch of meaningless IT certifications and a private pilot's license. I'm applying anyway.

Yep, and thanks to people such as yourself the application process takes much longer and at much higher cost. Who has to pay for it? Europeans.
Me, notebook, Dr S, etc. Will you be sending us some money to pay for your application, then?

My post was tounge-in-cheek, I'm not really applying. I know better than to waste the ESA's time.

Maybe one day Australia will have a manned space program, but for now I'll just use Orbiter.

It's OK, sarcasm doesn't really work that well on the Internet anyway.

Maybe I'll throw some of these guys :P :beach: :) :speakcool: :rofl:in next time.

The stats are in for the number of applicants. Significantly lower than I expected.

Can you guys check if I'm being a fool, though?
Look at the total number of applicants: 8413.
Now look at the number of male and female applicants, don't they add up to more than the total number of applicants listed? What does this mean? We must've had something like 500 people apply who are both male and female..

Have I missed something there, or have ESA forgotten how to add up?

It's not a very clear table, but it seems that the applicants have been split into 1st and 2nd citizenship. If you add the "number of applicants" column to the "as 2nd citizenship" column, you get the same total as the number of male+female.

i.e. 8413+603 = 7586+1430

I'll guess that they've made a mistake up the top of that webpage then, where they say that they had 8413 applicants who successfully handed in their medical forms.
ESA are confusing the hell out of me..

Also, one of the questions in their sample test is:
"What is the European standard current?"

It then goes on to list a series of voltages.
