Cycling / Running - Logs, Stories, & Pictures (any fellow cyclists or runners here?)

In the last few weeks I've also taken up cycling a bit, on a "normal" road bike. For the most part I've just been to some neighboring town or to the local disused train station, which lies a bit lower in the valley. Have to agree with Codz, it's fun, and much more so than taking a walk! :)

Tex, your bike is the Space Shuttle of the bikes, with all those displays and electronics

Good running session this evening, 30°C but a gentle breeze made it very pleasant. 3660 meters in 31'45", which makes 6.92 km/h ; so it's an improvement over the last sessions. However, my heartbeat was more in the 150-155 BPM range ; sometimes I was slowing down to 145 BPM to avoid the burnout. A final sprint brought me to 174 BPM. I tend to recover quickly, which is rather a good sign.

I had a nice sunset ride today - it probably amounted to 20km in total. I rode around the countryside, then I visited my old village where I grew up - the sense of freedom is awesome!

I got a new job. This will add 100 Km to my weekly cycling. So I can rake in the monthly coach fare

I put all of my training to good use on Wednesday by climbing Longs Peak in Colorado. It's 4,346 meters above MSL, so the altitude provided an interesting challenge. Near the summit it was almost a vertical rock climb, and if I continued at the pace I was at I would have vomited. Instead of going in short bursts with frequent breaths, I had to stop to breathe between every move I made.

The trip was probably the most amazing thing I've ever done, with some incredible views.

To make the trip less challenging (especially removing the need for hitting the trail at 3 AM), I spent the night here.

I had to cross this section to get to the summit, it required putting my foot on an iron bar over the edge of a cliff over 100 meters above the valley.

This part required a lot of endurance, going up several hundred feet in such a short distance. It felt like I was going nowhere.

Another exposed part.

Making it to the summit was an amazing feeling.

This trip definitely made all of my long runs in the past few months feel worthwhile. My first mountain climb definitely won't be my last.

I don't handle heights or ledges very well, so I could not have climbed that mountain. Nice job!

Wow, beautiful ! I'd like to go there one day.

Weather is keeping me "in the hangar" those days. Nearly 40°C (104°F) the afternoon, not a cloud. The only way to go running would be to wake up around 5:00 AM, before the thermometer hits 30°C (86°F), but as the heat prevents me from sleeping, it's some kind of vicious circle. I'll try to run this week-end, though. Probably at night fall.

So bad week for running, temperatures won't fall until next Wednesday. :(

Still loving the new bike. Went out today and snagged 2 KOMs and 2nd overall on the Kemah bridge. I posted a video last week which shows the bridge, I just wish I recorded today's ride! Average speed over the climb: 24.2 MPH.

Took a couple pics before leaving today.

I'm pretty happy with this evening session. Ran 31 minutes at 7.44 km/h. My goal was to run more than 30 minutes at more than 7 km/h, so it is a success ! :)

Also, the temperature was much cooler (19°C, 66.2°F), and ideal for outdoor sport activities.

Next goal : more than 30 minutes at more than 7.5 km/h ; I'm not far from it already.

Cool video with two pros and an amateur.

Found an old photo of myself before discovering cycling and losing all my weight. Inspired me to make a before and after.

I'm considering upgrade of my bike. I assumed asking people on my "native" forum won't harm. :)

I bought it as a cheap bike. I rode it for 3 years, and I feel that the the drive is substantially worn. I could replace the parts with equivalents, but I want to consider an upgrade to the bike to increase its performance.

I want to have more gears for easier riding uphill and easy going along the road at 30 km/h with smooth and responsive gear shifting. I know there's a science behind selecting right transmission numbers in the bike's drive, and I hope someone should know how to do it.

Overall look (but mine is blue):
Name|Value
Wheel ⌀|28"
Frame|20"
Frame material|Al
Forward fork|Steel, rigid
Weight|16.94 kg
Steering shaft|VP
Crank arms|Steel,PROWHEEL
Front wheel hub|KT steel
Rear wheel hub|KT steel
Cogset|MF-TZ21 SHIMANO 14-28 teeth, 7 gears
Rear Derailleur|RD-TY22 SHIMANO Tourney
Gear Shifter|ST-EF51 SHIMANO
Brakes|V-type TEKTRO Alum.
I'm mostly looking to replace the rear cogset which has worn most, install a 2 or 3-ring front chain ring with a derailleur, and put on a fitting chain.

I'm not going to install a cushion fork yet, for my driving style I'm happy with the rigid one.

Does the idea sound ok to you? Any advices?

Well my new bicycle arrived today (my old one got stolen), and i am going to have to take it out for a test this weekend.

After an enforced 2-month pause for a broken thumb, I'm slowly getting back to cycling again, and yesterday re-enacted my patented London-Cambridge-London ride. Imagine my surprise when I suddenly saw a delta-glider passing overhead! It was a fair distance, so I didn't get a clear view of the silhouette, but my only explanation was for it to be a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_Vulcan"]Vulcan bomber[/ame] taken for a spin. Some digging on the internet afterward showed that there was an airshow on in Duxford near Cambridge which indeed featured a Vulcan aerial display.

Finally we can see where your inspiration had rooted at!
