Cycling / Running - Logs, Stories, & Pictures (any fellow cyclists or runners here?)

Riding with a different group while out of town in some very gentle rolling hills.

75 miles yesterday.

104 miles (by myself) today:

Avg HR:140
Max HR: 172
Calories Burned: 4,595

168 oz of water/Gatorade consumed.

Food:
(2) Bananas
(3) Powerbars
(1) Fiber One Bar
(1) Clif Bar
(2) Turkey sandwiches
(2) Cokes
(1) V8
(2) Packages of Shot Blocks

Two words....holy crap! That has to be the hardest ride for me. Nothing spectacular speed wise, but that is a lot of miles by yourself! The wind didn't like me much either. Had a head wind more than I should have, but I made the best of it. I explored some new roads and enjoyed the route. When I rolled by the house on the way back I was 2 miles short of 100, so I kept going and crossed the Kemah bridge twice for good measure. That was NOT easy!

Unfortunately I left my heart rate monitor at my Mom's this weekend, so I had to use my Timex. Not much else I can think to add right now; I'm struggling just to keep my head up. Looking forward to my bed...

I'm guessing you're asking about the 104 mile ride?

Moving time was 5h:53m; Total elapsed time was 7h:20m. I stopped four times to refill water/gatorade and get more food. I tried to keep the stops as short as possible, but they got longer and longer as I got further into the ride. The first two stops were only about 10 minutes each, but the last two were much longer as I took some time to eat while stopped. I generally just stop to refill water and get food, then hop back on the bike and eat while riding.

Awesome, Tex!

It's good to see people do so much physical activity in times of Pepsi and hamburgers

As for me: I'm on a forced break at the moment. The bottom bracket of my bike is broken. It began to create noises and vibrations on Tuesday. I ordered a new bottom bracket and the corresponding tools yesterday. It might arrive today already.

Useful help comes from Youtube...

The BB on your new bike already went out?

The BB on your new bike already went out?

Yes, surprisingly. It already was cracked. I think it was due to material deficiency. These days they produce almost everything in China...

It turned out that it (likely) was faulty from the beginning, because the new bottom bracket works way more like a charm. You almost can blow on the pedals to make the crankset spin. It's phantastic now :)

Removing the crankset, the bottom bracket, and insert the new bottom bracket really was a cakewalk by the way, which I did not expect at all. It takes only a few minutes. And you don't need lots of force. Just clean and grease the thread, insert the new bottom bracket, install the crankset again and that's it. I'm very glad that I bought the tools.

That's the new bottom bracket and the required tool for installation:

With the left tool you remove/tighten the pedals and screws of the crank arms; with the center tool you remove the crank arms; and with the right tool you remove the bottom bracket:

Awesome shot! Thanks for sharing your repairs with us. :)

It was a real pleasure. Especially because everything worked so well :)

Maybe my short tutorial could become useful for someone else in future. But I don't hope it becomes necessary ;)

I haven't really been working out much in the last six months, but one thing I did do was cut my soda intake almost entirely, and I've been drinking a lot of water and juice when I've been thirsty.

The result I wanted to share with you all:

I went from 205# (93 kg) in June, and I just weighed in at 184.5# (83.7 kg) today for a net loss of 20.5# (9.3 kg).

I'm feeling a lot better; I'm starting to shrink sideways, I'm sleeping better, and . . . yeah. I'm feeling a lot better nowadays.

:woohoo:

Congrats! It's amazing what simply cutting sodas will do and switching to water. The only time I drink a coke now is on a long intense ride. The sugar in the form of carbs is exactly what my body needs at that moment, and it works fast. The difference being I am out burning thousands of calories on one ride where most people are sitting on their butts drinking soda. :P

That's probably a good decision

I also drink water basically. Sometimes with fresh lemon.

Awesome!

I lost about 10 Kgs as well, but within one year. I did it a different way (vegan diet, then vegetarian; now changing back to vegan, probably forever).

There are many ways to reduce weight and become/stay healthy. But the most important thing is that you feel good, and sleep good (which is really important). So you achieved it already :)

However, this nice day now will come to an end with a few beers (and a tasty vegan meal)

PS: beer; well, at least a good German beer; has very little calories (less than a comparable amount of bread with sausage for example). It doesn't contain any sugar and flavours [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinheitsgebot"]Reinheitsgebot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Same here. Almost. I drink a cold coke occasionally when I return home after work (always by bike).

Well I've got nothing on Tex, but I took my bike out for a spin today. I completed a ride of 28 km in 50 min, I had an average bpm of 180 and i peaked at 230 bpm.

It is inspirational to see so many of the orbiter community taking up cycling as a way to improve there fitness.

Well, the pleasure regarding my new bottom bracket didn't last too long. The bike is still okay however, but I am not...

I broke my right collarbone today. I got in contact with streetcar rails (although I crossed them diagonally). I think I don't have to mention the rest of that adventure. I did not notice the fracture immediately. I still managed to drive home, but had a stop at the local hospital because the pain in my right shoulder became really nasty within 15 minutes.

The following x-ray image does not show my fracture, but it looks equal:

I'm wearing a special bandage right now. Tomorrow I'll talk to the head physician. It's a 2/3 "chance" for a surgery. But I actually don't want...

But one thing already is for sure: no sports for weeks.

At least the painkillers do their work :)

Ouch!

I almost had the same experience in central Melbourne once whilst riding alongside tram tracks (streetcar rails), so I have some idea of what you must have experienced.

Get well soon.

My brother managed to simply fall on the streetcar rails after too many days of exams, lack of sleep and poor diet, and he looked pretty ruined when he returned from the hospital. Those rails are really nasty. I already hate to drive near them in my car.
