I need a bit of help finding something that will work. I'm working on a project (hint: think about my username!) and I need a sound module of sorts that I can record a custom sound on and have it triggered by a pushbutton. I've already checked my local Radioshack and Model Railroad store seeing if they had something, but they don't. I tink I've seen something somewhere, but I can't remember where or when. All I'm looking for is an electronic module that I can load a custom sound on and have it played when a button is pushed. The sooner I can get this done, the sooner I can get back to work on that moon base I've been promising since November! :P :P

Maybe try a music store, or a similar, online entity. A sampling keyboard (or perhaps other) synthesizer will do the job (although it might be more expensive than would be acceptable), and it is possible that you could find some component(s) of such a device, that would be useful for your purpose.

I had a little keyboard, some years ago (made by Casio, I think; maybe 18" long, battery powered, the sort of thing that one could carry in a backpack), that probably cost less than $100, and it was capable of recording and playing a sample. I don't suppose that you are really looking for a musical-keyboard-type controller, but you might anyway be able to find something useful by searching for musical instruments.

Maybe something like this?

Yes, Radio Shack used to be a good place to find that kind of stuff; and apparently such components can still occasionally be found there, as this recently posted article seems to indicate...

... but they seem to be drifting more and more away from components and such electronic hobbyist items, towards consumer electronics.

Just to let you guys know, it took a while, but I finally dug through radioshack's site to the point where this little module jumped out at me. It's going to take some modification to make it work for what I need, but it's well within my reach.
Thanks to everyone who responded!
