I have made my first two planets, but when orbiter loaded up i went to look at the oceans for the water reflections orbiter had a brain fart and crashed.I use gimp and not photoshop because i dont have it.
could anyone tell me how to produce a working landmask? I did look at the tutorial saying that land should be white and water black. the pltex told me the opposite.

What does crash: the pltex while creating landmask, or Orbiter after creating the landmask?

Textures for pltex must be either 8-bit color or 24-bit color bmps. Try to save them in GIMP as 8-bit grayscale, but first change the contrast of image to +127, to make sure that there are only black and white pixels.

orbiter crashes. i look at the log and it complains thatTransparency texture mask file too short: Foofoo_lmask.tex
Disabling specular reflection for this planet.

Is this for texture level <= 8? Did you copy both newly created Foofoo_lmask.bin and Foofoo_lmask.tex to Textures folder? If .bin file doesn't correspond to .tex, then texture file may be too short.

I apologize for my complaining for i have found the problem. Simply put, i just didnt make the mask a level 8 and therefore it didn't write it as a water tex.
