I've been telling my friend about orbiter and he wants to try it out. I have a bunch of addons and stuff I set up on my installation that I want to put on his computer as well. I could go through the whole process of manually finding the addons and stuff again and do it on his computer, but that would take a long time. I would like to be able to just copy my whole orbiter directory onto a flash drive and copy it onto his computer.

Is there any reason why this might be a bad idea?

Short answer: No. Orbiter works fine from a flash drive, without problems.

If I were you I wouldn't (just a personal preference, since I literally mean "If I were you"). I always think it's best to start using a program with no addons, and then start adding more of them as you get tired of the default stuff.

I've had about fifty Orbiter installations, the last 49 of which I deleted because they were filled with addons I didn't use.

But yes, transferring Orbiter installations via a flash drive or over a network should work fine.

Izack, FTFY ;)

icamefromouterspace, the only thing you might want to do is make sure your friend's computer has the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package installed. A fresh Orbiter installation normally checks for it, and installs it if missing, but your flash disk installation won't do that.

Also, your friend will want to be sure to update the video mode on the video tab before he runs your copied Orbiter installation the first time (make sure that 'Always enumerate devices' is checked as well, although it should be since that is its default setting).

thanks for the responses.

What I ended up doing was running a fresh installation first so that it could run it's first run diagnostic thing to check for visual c++ and stuff. Then I just deleted it and copied in my flash drive version

He wont understand the concept of learning, "Teach a man to fish" but it should work fine.

Good points, and if he wants to do a fresh install he can. I really just wanted to show him some basics and stuff and I wanted to use my version of orbiter. One thing about orbiter is that it has a real steep learning curve and I wish there was someone to show me all of the basic controls and things.
