Images of American flag taken by Apollo 14 astronauts provide fuel for conspiracists

MONTREAL - Did all the manned U.S. lunar landings between July 1969 and December 1972 actually take place or were they hoaxes?

A Canadian book publisher has taken a closer look at images acquired by the Apollo 14 astronauts just before they left the moon 40 years ago.

What Robert Godwin uncovered will probably provide more ammunition for those who doubt a U.S. astronaut ever set foot on Earth's celestial neighbour.
Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are credited with being the first humans to set foot on the moon, on July 20, 1969.

One frequently used argument is that video of the Stars and Stripes planted on lunar soil appears to show the flags blowing in the wind — even though there's no atmosphere on the moon.

Godwin says two frames of film taken from the Apollo 14 lunar lander in February 1971 may lead some people to believe that's true.

Blabbering morons. That's what those conspiracy theory nutbars are. Instead of considering a simple logical explanation for the appearing in two different positions (ie: perhaps a moon walking astronaut brushed against it or moved it during one of the EVAs) they go right back to an idiotic conspiracy theory had has been widely discredited and that would have required tens of thousands of people, including the Soviet government, to keep the secret and remain silent for four decades.

The really sad part is that the article (eventually) gives the ACTUAL explanation, but you wouldn't know it from reading the headline.

You can't fix stupid. Oftentimes it's hard to even slow it down.

Where are the frames in question?
Looks like they don't even bother to show up their "evidence" any more.

To give it credit, the article does not seem to take all the sensationalism that is common in such cases, and just list the things in the artificial neutrality manner common to better newsmakers.

Right behind you - don't look!
Why won't they just go away? Money. The media is a business and readers are not the customers, advertisers are. Newspapers and magazines featuring articles targeted at the conspiracy fanatics sell more. Just check out the multitude of papers, mags and TV fauxmentaries revolving around 2012, Nibiru, Moon hoaxes, 9/11 conspiracies, Illuminati, Knights Templar and grey aliens from Zeta Reticuli.
The informed public is not a target. They already have the info, they have the encyclopedias, they have researched. They're not going to buy more which is the key argument here. You don't sell stuff to people who have already enough and don't need more: you sell it to those eager to buy it by the supertankerload.
Simple economics, really.

It is too easy to become an expert today, especially an expert for media attention.

If anything they're going to grow more prolific in the coming decades as everyone with firsthand memory of the landings dies off. I wouldn't be surprised to go back in time and learn, for instance, that half the "legendary" events of the Civil War never happened. Once the people who can say ":censored:, I was there!" are gone, subsequent generations can pretty much make up whatever they want.

For a generation that is watching NASA dismantle their manned space program, it's probably pretty hard to believe we flew to the moon half a century ago. What's easier to believe: A huge national effort costing hundreds of billions that achieved something never done before or since? Or some sound stage cranking out stock footage?

It depends on whether people apply a bit of critical thinking. For them to have faked it requries would have requires the full cooperation and absolutel silence of tens of thousands of people including the Soviet government. Not only would they had to have cooperated, they would have had to maintain their silence for 4+ decades. It's simply not a reasonable, rational or possible scenario for that reason alone.

Critical thinking?

If we as a nation were still capable of that, Jersey Shore wouldn't be in their 3rd season.

NASA is dismantling the ISS? I didn't know this... apparently they are cancelling COTS as well? :shifty:

Still, one can imagine that the Moon Hoax nonsense could get worse as time goes on... just like how some people today somehow cannot imagine how the ancient Egyptians built pyramids, the people of 3011 might wonder how people from the 1960s could possibly go to the Moon...

It's the internet, expect hyperbole.

Occam's Razor. Given lack of evidence, people tend to assume the simplest solution. For many, aliens building the pyramids is easier to believe than a decades-long project built by tens of thousands of slave laborers.

Got to give them credit tho. They give more attention to NASA and thus do better for it in the long run then foaming at the mouth politicians gutting funding and admins pushing pork filled projects as policy.

The Mythbusters tested all these supposed "impossible photos" and discovered that humans have indeed have been to the Moon. Don't believe it check out these videos:
Still don't think we landed?

You might have misunderstood the title of the thread, everyone here with their head on their shoulders agrees about this, it's more of a rant against people who insist that every document, picture, manual, congressional hearing and everythig else one can even remotely link with the lunar landings has been made up.

Read also the other messages written before yours and you'll see what I mean.

Sure its unbelievable . As far as we know today by reading the Egyptian bureaucracy, it had been ten thousands of professional burial monument workers. Slaves had no role there, muscle work was mostly done by farmers during the flooding months, when farming was impossible. And that with shift plans, team work and other employment concepts we imagine as modern achievements.

The biggest error comes always in the assumption that current technology is the only way and less technology can't do that. A computer that is out performed by a modern pocket calculator can land you on the moon? Impossible! That you needed even less calculations per second for that, as a modern car engine controller needs to perform secretly every second, that is not considered by such ignorant people.
