News Astronaut Bruce McCandless II Dies at 80

Certain carbon-based system components fail as they age. Probably a design issue.

    I've moved to Seattle

I've been around for a while, residing in Maryland, USA. But this week I've moved to the Seattle area, to be closer to granddaughter (and her parents). I'd be interested in any Orbiter-related activities in the area, especially at the Museum of Flight.

Poll Which forum skin do you use?

I use Default, but not by default. I tried them all a long time ago, and re-tried them just now, and prefer the default theme (which looks like White Pages to me). But if the site admins switch to a different default, I'm willing to consider it. I prefer a light theme. Also blue-ish.

    Cool Photography

I've never seen this thread before - very interesting. The photo below is not mine, but was made in 1931. The original print is in my possession and is about 34 inches wide (over 87 cm). I scanned it at 300 pixels/inch, but downscaled it by 10x to keep it a manageable size for this post. The...

Fascinating, Messierhunter. Is it possible for you to post a comparison with/without the adaptive optics?

News Navy Builds Protype Ramjet With Model Rocket Engine

ramjet or scramjet ? Next to last paragraph has: "By the third launch, they had a working scramjet missile propulsion unit." I assume this is a simple mistake, and the author meant "ramjet", as elsewhere in the article (12 times).

    OHM Lagrange MFD

I hope his work isn't permanently gone. One of my back-burner projects has been to edit and post his work to the Rocket Science For Amateurs section of OrbiterWiki. Of course, I haven't been saving his posts as they came up, assuming I could get them whenever I wanted. :(

Launch News SpaceX to send privately crewed Dragon spacecraft around the Moon in 2018

    That ain't no asteroid, bud.

Is the Moon clearly in orbit around a larger planetary body? Or is the Earth-Moon pair two planets in a nearly common orbit around the Sun? After all, the Moon is well outside the Earth's sphere-of-influence (SOI), as Orbiter constantly shows us on lunar flights. Take a look at this diagram of...

News Nasa Finds 7 Rocky planets in 1 star system

Habitable tidally locked? According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumstellar_habitable_zone, the notion of the "habitable zone" is based on "sufficient atmospheric pressure". For tidally-locked planets it seems this assumption is unlikely to apply. Wouldn't the dark (cold) side freeze out...
