Brown wins crunch vote on 42 days

I wear reading that in the news about 2hours a go
 
I want out. Might move to Aus if i get the opportunity - which i actually might at some point soon. This country is rapidly going downhill.
 
This is a shame. I don't see why on earth you can put someone in jail for that long if you don't have any proof at all.
What's next: a ban on thinking about certain things? When is something defined a terroristic plan? This being very unclear makes me think something is not right. A leader of any country can use this against other people he or his party doesn't like (and this has happened in the past in Europe, thankfully coming to an end in 1945)...

The UK is not the only country where things like this are happening. With the "creating a safe environment" and "war against terror" as excuses, lot's of our freedom (and privacy!) is being reduced. If it's getting worse, we are living in 'police states', I'm also seriously looking for alternative countries to live and work in the future.

I'm a bit sad about the this too: the police in NL has to make a certain amount of money each month by 'ticketing' (not sure of the english word) car drivers. Just like a company making profit. This totally goes against the original idea of having police IMO.

Yeah our police have 'performance targets' too. Of course it's all for our own goods, protecting us from all the terrorists out there... Like that poor bugger who got shot 7 times in the face a couple of years ago because he had brownish skin colour and ran from some plain clothes, armed police who were shouting at him.

Whats really sad is that i'm sure a lot of people in the UK will like this move.
 
I'm hoping the 'Common' Sense in the House of Lords will throw this back in Brownie's face. Why 42 Days? isn't 24 days enough to get some evidence to at least charge people with? Also, have you read the process it takes to get the 42 day 'long stay permit', looks like it will take at least 5 working days to process it! And Why are MP involved, Last I checked, this was a legal matter?!?

McDuck, It's call a 'fine' over here in the UK. Yes, the Police and councils are sometimes over-keen when it comes to Speeding, parking fines. Don't talk to me about parking fines. Oh, in case anyone outside UK using the M6 there's been a few speeding camera on and under some bridges (trolls!), also there are now several unmarked cars, but they mainly go after the serious speeders, so watch yourselves.
 
Call me unfamiliar with the legislative process in the United Kingdom, but the House of Lords can vote against this, can they not? And even if they do not, can it still be vetoed or denied Royal Assent (I am unsure as to what the proper term is)?

Pointless questions aside, this does not sound like a good idea.

grrrrrrr *angry face*.The fact that the whips of a party can basically beat dissidents into towing the party line instead of going with what their constituents say is terrible. it should be about what the people want not some arbitrary figure that is basically plucked from the ether. Besides what can you find out in 42 days you cant find out in 24? some pretty impressive things have been accomplished in less time than it takes to make a sandwich...

The House of Lords will probably throw it back to the Commons, then more haggling. Its bad news, 6 weeks of incarceration without charge is scary stuff. Mistakes have been made before; for an innocent person, this could ruin their life.
Just as scary, Brown has threatened to use the Parliament Act, to force it into law, ignoring the House of Lords opinions.
I haven't seen any good arguments why they need the extra time.

I'd like to see the full text of this bill. My opinion of it could range from "semi-good idea" to "horrible idea" depending on exactly who qualifies as a "terror suspect." If only foreign nationals qualify, and only under certain conditions (I'd have to see the conditions to know if I liked them), it's a semi-good idea. If only foreign nationals apply, but with no other restrictions, I'm torn. It might be a good idea, but, as a foreign national, I'd be a bit catious visiting Britain. If it applies to British nationals, then it's a really, really, really *bad* idea.
 
Great way to protect Britain against terrorism (of the Islamic kind). Let's lock random Muslims up for 42 days without charge. That'll help ease tensions between West and Middle East...

Then who the heck got it through in the first place? Not that I can say I understand the English government, First Among Equals is the only Jeffery Archer book I couldn't get through.

No problem for the government. It's the citizens' money after all, and they have shown a willingness to spend it without a care. If they run out, they'll simply raise taxes.

After all, Robin Hood can't do anything since bows are illegal and the Sherwood Forest is full of CCTVs...
