To be honest...I actually can't really care for the olympics this year. don't know why. I even missed my favorite sports.

My understanding is that there's a bipartisan feeling among the French that it's a waste of their taxpayer dollars, and for the broader world, it seems that whatever your values are, there's been some scandal that is just perfect to offend you specifically. I tend to ignore the Olympics at the best of times, and by all accounts this iteration is a s๐Ÿ’ฉtshow.

You sound tired, I'm a bit concerned. You need holidays. Without the kids ๐Ÿ˜‚

Yes, that's the whole point of modern (now contemporary) art. It's not even new. In 1917 Marcel Duchamp was exposing an urinal labeled 'Fontaine' in a New-Yorker art museum catalog, under a pseudo. It was pure scandal. Decades after, he was still telling to the many journalists that kept interviewing him, trying to understand, that there was precisely nothing to understand. He was surprised and genuinely amused it was such a huge deal. A century later the 'ready made' artistic movement is created is an 'has-been' thing. Thank God art is not only about marble and classical paintings, it is a living thing that evolves in unpredictable ways.

I get that conservatives might have been offended by some performances this year, but I think it is actually a good meter of the health of a democratic society that such performances and 'scandals' are possible without people ending into an arctic prison. โ„๏ธ

I was thinking like that before the games actually started. But now I must say I'm quite impressed things are going so smoothly, and people I see around me are reacting the same way. Even old people in their 70's usually always bitching about something. ๐Ÿง“

I don't feel robbed of anything. I mean, the schools, hospitals an power plants are still running. Sure it could be better, it always can be.

and by all accounts this iteration is a s๐Ÿ’ฉtshow.

I think calling the Olympic Games a s... is a very slippery slope.

You are likely right, but I can't. My leave is reserved for the kids. But I went swimming today after work without any kids to watch, so I finally had time to do some lanes. In the holidays with my son, I played more basketball than I ever wished for.

I don't watch it since I don't support the political "message" related to it. But I didn't watch it for more than 30 years anyway. I think the last one I watched was Barcelona '92, due to lack of TV stations and no internet back then ๐Ÿ˜‚

I don't know which political message you mean there. "Corruptio optimi pessima" maybe?

I think you know about a Turkish old chap shooting for silver without safety equipment.

Which is ?
I don't really want to turn this thread into an off topic, sociopolitical discussion. Meanwhile I handle the topic by a complete boycott, which includes expressing my personal opinion publically.

You know, there was also a well-known French metal group, Gojira, performing, and Celine Dion, amongst others.
Never heard of Gojira. But I'm not a real metal fan anyway ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ And I know only one song from Celine Dion... ๐Ÿ›ณ

I didn't watch the opening. I didn't even know Olympia began until my girlfriend mentioned it ๐Ÿ˜œ (she doesn't watch either; she saw it in the news).

Believe it or not, I also missed the European football shampionship, completely (same counts for any world championship). I don't know a single player name (both, first name + last name) or only one gane result. I don't even know any rule of football ๐Ÿ˜‡ But it's simply because I never cared.

I used to watch the Formula 1 Grand Prix in the 1990s though. But it became boring quickly. The only thing that never becomes boring to me are aeroplanes, spacecraft and the night sky.

I'm a strange dude. You can lock me downstairs in a modern city archive for weeks or probably months, with preserved food and artificial lighting. I'll be fine. But a huge, public event, would drain my vital spirits quickly ๐Ÿ’€

See, that is my error. I should live like a good Hobbit, but instead, I must leave on adventures from time to time. :ROFLMAO:

I don't know why some people here are reluctant in sports. Maybe we're getting addicted with electronic devices too much, and forgetting the pre-Internet modes of entertainment like movies, news and sports. Anyway, although I'm also addicted with electronic devices, I do often watch sports, especially cricket matches involving team India. I had also watched the Qatar FIFA World Cup, where we had enjoyed Argentina's victory over France.

Interestingly, France just won against Argentina in men's soccer, 1-0. There was almost a brawl between both teams at the end of the match.

You are on a quite nerdy forum. The audience is mostly people that love computers and simulations. Now, I do enjoy sailing, gardening, hiking, playing the guitar... Most people around here are like that too, so let's stay away from clichรฉs.

Also, as a teacher, my experience is that young people are quite addicted to screens (mostly, smartphones) but they also do enjoy the sport class a lot.

Well, I had the realization at a point, that doing sports myself is way better than just watch other people doing. Since then, watching sports in TV turned out a rather bland experience and usually, if I do this anyway, I get quickly bored. The only time I can really watch sports is, when my brother is running on a event with a livestream, then the whole clan is watching it (Next: New York Marathon).

Also, I don't see the difference between "being addicted with electonic devices" and "watching events with an electronic device". Its still people hanging in front of the screen, not watching the world outside. Or using their hands to create something.

I vehemently object to these allegations! I definitely do not enjoy gardening! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

Just going on what I know about @TheShuttleExperience's daily routine, he could give quite a few people a run for their money when it comes to fitness. Liking watching sports (especially the bloated corrupt mess that the olympic games are nowadays) does really not say anything about people actually doing sports.

Well, I'm not reluctant to sports. I'm just not interested in watching others doing competitions. I love cycling and swimming for example. I have a bycicle ergometer and a treadmill at home, and I use it daily for many years (45 min. / 5.5 hrs a week currently). On vacation, which is always at a seashore, I swim for about one to two hours a day, no matter if it's a hot sunny day or a cloudy and rainy day. I only know it's time to leave the water once my hands start to transform into an unidentifiable coral species ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

That's interesting when I think about it. It turns out that I actually had more electronic devices in the pre-internet area. Beside various gaming consoloes, it was a VHS recorder, cassette recorder, DVD recorder, a walkman/discman (actually various) a video camera, a photo camera and Hi-Fi systems. I even built my own loudspeakers. And since the early '90s, the PC became just another part of the electronic collection.

Today, I only own one (powerful) PC, and a tablet and smartphone when I am underway/on vacation. I don't even have a normal phone at home anymore - there is just the router these days. Back in the '90s one had to carry an entire bag just for taking pictures and recording videos on vacation. And the racks for storing VHS cassettes and DVDs are all gone.

Okay, there is my flight sim setup at home. But it's really just for flying ๐Ÿ˜

I don't know if it's addiction. I would say it makes life more enjoyable and convenient. Especially today. I really prefer my car's nav system over the old road atlas for example ๐Ÿ™‚
