Winter has struck the UK!!!

Heavy snowfall is affecting roads in parts of the UK after several centimetres fell overnight.
Amber weather warnings of more snow and very low temperatures are in place for Tuesday morning, and police forces are reporting "tricky" driving conditions.
The M20 in Kent was blocked overnight by stranded lorries, rail travel is disrupted and some schools are closed.
There was about 1cm of snow in parts of south east England, while up to 8cm fell in Northumberland.

I'm in Northumberland. and can confirm 1" of snow on the bin-lid.

We had -10°C last night, when I was driving home from a game of Battletech late.

Luckily, its so cold here, the snow is really fine and easily brushed off the car. Also its not too slippery because of the dry cold.

It could get nasty in a few days. Problem is we aren't geared up for any snow or cold. Just doesn't happen that often.
Railways just shut down now rather than suffer angry passengers.
Pathetic really.

Its surprisingly relaxed here in Northern Germany, usually we are also reacting pretty allergic to any snow here.

But as said, its so cold, its a very fine and very "dry" snow, which is a lot better than the usual snow/rain mix we get here.

They measured a -41°C wind chill temperature on Brocken mountain yesterday, especially high above us, its cold now.

Starting to thaw now, and a freeze overnight. Pavements will be treacherous tomorrow, frozen slush, with fresh snow on top.

Eh.. Isn't it the other way around? I would think clouds develop in the valleys and do eventually spread out when wind pushes them over the ridges.

Ahhhhh, flatlander weather. :lol:

"Flatlander", btw, refers to a particular type of Californian driver who never drives in snowy mountains and thinks that, because they have all wheel drive, they can drive through the mountains in a heavy snowstorm without chaining up. Observation of a flatlander is usually accompanied by wagers as to how far they'll make it across the pass before either crashing or being pulled over by Highway Patrol. :rofl:

Yeah... just like me watching my neighbor trying to pull the stuck trailer across a frozen road without success, lacking the traction to come forward at all.

I could have watching this show for hours.

Sadly I am a nice guy, after some minutes I walking up to him and explained:

Decouple the trailer.
Manually push the trailer in the right direction.
Also push the stuck wheel out of the hole (Where the gully was).
Now couple the trailer on the car again.
Profit.

Yup, we got a whole lot more snow than expected. Came home last night to the sight of snow-covered streets and flurries of snow getting blown around. Cars were really having a hard time getting grip. And, since it snowed through the night, the early commute must have been fun on some of the hilly streets.

I always thought that was weird, given that most of the UK is at a much higher latitude than most of the US, and here in DC, technically part of the "South", we expect to get clobbered at least once every winter with a heavy snowstorm. So far we avoided it this year, but we did get a brutal deep freeze for a about a week, another common annual occurrence.

Only explanation I have is the UK is a narrow vertical country. Most of your relations are to the North or South, and there are good reasons for that...

Was hoping it would be gone by now, still hanging around. Wind is the worst here in NE England, drifting snow. Looks like the South is getting it now, 9 deaths attributed to the weather.

Heh - after waking up to -25 degrees centigrade and lower over the last two weeks, it's getting much warmer now... -10 seems positively T-shirt weather :lol:

But up here everyone is used to these conditions - at least at the end of February daytime temperatures rise as the sun comes actually up - two years ago we had 'the big chill' in January with the lowest morning temperature -36 and even noon temperatures never rising above -30 - that was pretty miserable.

The UK is protected by the jet stream. In London or parts of the UK, the same latitude in Canada has polar bears walking about!
