Ryan's Pointless Space Facts.

Ok guys back to the topic what does everyone think about the new hubble telescope finding molicules on another distant planet.

There's a NEW Hubble Space Telescope, when did that happen?

And it found MOLECULES on another planet? Surely not. Only WE have molecules!

"Pointless Facts"...another word for Trivia?

Yes, bring them on. I like trivia!

Why not post them as quiz questions, try to stump the experts? ;)

Here's one for Ryan:

Let's say you built a model Earth-Moon-Sun system in your back yard, such that the moon were 3 cm from the Earth (the earth is 1.5mm wide at this scale), and the sun, about the size of a volleyball, were 11 m away from the Earth. OK. So let's install the nearest neighboring star, Proxima Centauri. How far away would this model star have to be, to stay at the same scale as your solar system model?

(a) 3 m away
(b) 3 km away
(c) 30 km away
(d) 3000 km away

?

d, 3000 KM, but i always thought the nearest star was alpha centauri.

I'm gonna have to make my questions harder. :graduate:

OK, no mercy from now on...:study:

(What we really need is an emoticon for "evil laughter."

OK, here's something obscure and funny I came across once...

What was Al Bean's favorite food during flights?

I know one for you MT, this maybe out of the forum rules, but i dont know. What was the issue of playboy the was stuck in Pete Conrad and Al Bean EVA checklist?
Tricky, well for some people it wont be, if you know what i mean.

On April 6th today, 1973. Pioneer 11 was luanched from the Kennedy Space Centre.

Pioneer 11 is one of few space probes to leave our Solar System, Also carrying the famous pioneer plaque, on this plaque was math equations, earth stuff, and a picture of a man and woman, this was just in case they met some unsuspected visitors during it's travels.
This is a picture of the plaque.

Great question, all I remember of this was their jumping up and down for joy (as portrayed by that FtEttM episode). Well, for now, I'll guess that it would have probably been the October or maybe November 1969 issue.

Regarding Al Bean, see p. 61 of "Carrying the Fire" by Michael Collins:
Al Bean Pleasant, persistent, relentless pursuit of required information--give him an office boy's desk and within a week he will know what the president of the company does. Very pleasant fellow to be around, especially if you like spaghetti, which is all he eats on a trip.
:P

According to the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal, the centerfolds were taken from September 1967, October 1967, December 1968, and January 1969.

Ok guys, it's quiet a big day in space news today. On April 7, 1983. STS-6 astronauts, Story Musgrave and Don Peterson, makes the first ever Space Shuttle space walk. It was performed by the Late Space Shuttle Challenger. Heres a picture of Musgrave during the EVA.

Also in 2002, the Mars Odyssey probe was luanched from the Kennedy Space Centre. The probe had intruments mainly containing things to do with the radiation from the Martian Surface.
Also i just want to add for a personal reason, may Charlton Heston rest in peace, those damn dirty apes finallly cuaght up with him.

"the first ever Space Shuttle space walk"
Or you could say, the first Space Shuttle EVA?

On this day Amercian astronomor David Rittenhouse was born on 1732 as you can see it wasnt long ago. He discovered the atmosphere of the planet Venus and also the transit of Venus. Also German astronomor Georg Von Peuerbach, died on this day, 1461, The one of many craters on the surface of the Moon is named after him, the Purbach crater, which is located on the rugged southern highlands of the moon.
Thanks.
Ryan.

Hey guys, it's quiet a big day in space exploration today. 1959, the firsrt group of NASA astronauts were officailly chosen, they better became known as the Mercury Seven. The Mercury Seven consisted of, Alan B. Shepard Jr the first Amercian in space and the 4th person to step on the Moons surface, Virgil I. Grissom, the first astronaut to be asked to fly twice he died in the fire of Apollo 1, John H. Glenn Jr, the first Amercian to orbit the earth and he also flew on STS-95, Donald K. Slayton, who did not fly in the Mercury program but became NASA head of astronauts operations and he flew on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, Walter M. Schirra, Flew on Sigma 7 the first Astronaut to fly in space three times, M. Scott Carpenter, flew on Aurora 7, L. Gordan Cooper Jr, flew on Faith 7 and Gemini 5.

Thats the Seven in the flight pressure suits. Space Suits as they later to became known as.
All the Mercury Seven except Deke Slayton was named after the Thunderbirds, Virgil, Alan, John, Scott and Gordan Tracy.
