Sounds like more of a problem of how to keep people sane in such extreme-boredom, extreme-responsibility jobs.
Yeah, eventually it will all get completely automated, but we are now, not then.

Perhaps the problem is in the games themselves - last time i checked, most games don't support an ability to terminate NOW and keep all progress (i.e. Minecraft - you can exit in one click, and start later from exactly the same spot. And Orbiter too, if you can call it a game).

Making such capability a mandatory requirement for game developers could reduce the game-related distractions significantly, especially if operators would be trained to take a few seconds to "reboot" and soak in the situation when distracted by their job from a distraction before acting.

You are solving the problem at the wrong end. If you are on duty, you should not. Never. Ever. Play any game or have any other distraction. Especially in such a job. No game. Not even a private phone call. Even if your mother is about to die (Though this is usually solved differently, e.g calling your manager or coworker, who then gently guide you out of work and into the bad news)

You should not even have your own smartphone on your worksite in such a position - even in my work, it is common that some places are non-smartphone zones.

You are right, such boring jobs don't require a human intelligence all the time. But when you do, you should have one ready. Also the software can err as well, in situations which a human would quickly understand as "beyond specification". For example, what if a sensor fails? A human can detect problems well and use creative means to solve the situation. A computer can only follow the protocol, even if it leads into disaster.

He really screwed up badly and will with certainty loose his job because of it. Just playing games while working is a reason for getting a cease and desist, killed people that way is dire enough to justify instantly firing you.

Not sure if that was really worth it. Compared to ATCs train dispatchers are largely underpaid for similar stress levels and responsibility.

New on my "Useless things I wish existed"-list:

An IDE that, when you double click on a build error in the console, doesn't just take you to the problematic place in the code, but also zooms in to 400% and plays a dramatic DUM-DUM-DUUUUUUUUM! sound.

Can't you make a plugin for that? Like "EBERT - Enhanced build error reporting tool"?

Now that's just pure evil:

Alas, it may as well be a microwave until I manage to fix it. If anyone has parts of a 1998 iMac G3 in Europe he's/she's trying to get rid of, I wouldn't mind. :)

To misquote an old Manta driver joke: "If you need spare parts, shoot one yourself!" #frommycolddeadhands

Welllll... One *hopes* we'll be back.

Yeah. When Germans started to form a Nazi colony there.

Eh, tried that, but the fact that the vast majority of sold G3 iMacs belong to later (quite different) revisions makes it risky to shoot the wrong part.

Looks like German comedians now have a field day because of the Böhmermann affair with Turkey. It is really possible to let Charlie Hebdo appear polite.

I, for example, only got to know about the Böhmermann thing after the fuss Erdogan made about it. If this isn't an example of Streisand effect I don't know what is.

Exactly. And only few people would have been talking much about the song about Erdogan that another satire show in TV made earlier, if the Turkey government did not demand the presence of German ambassador and did demand there that Germany forbids this. (Which the German government rejected)

Well, some idiot finally managed to crash his "drone" toy into a jetliner.

Idiots always ruin the fun for everyone. I hope they find the guy responsible and re-institute beheading in the UK.

I wonder how much UAVs will add to the overall chance of 'bird' strike. Not to disregard the significance of unnecessary aircraft damage and financial loss due to negligent 'drone' operators, but I imagine the increased risk to life is incredibly small.

Someone over on Reddit said that these forms were slow of late.

They don't seem slow to me, anyone else?
