Here's my SLS core and ML meshes. Both as per the configuration going into PDR. The ML is still lacking the ICPS Umbilical (ICPSU), the Crew Access Arm (CAA) and the Vehicle Access Arms (VAAs).

It would be great if someone could give these proper modules.

Very nice, it should be no trouble at all to create all three variants from these.

The NASA docs still show the rockets in B/W test pattern livery. But optional operational textures can be a solution for the hard core members who prefer foam orange.

Keep up the great work.

Here's the latest ML work. The first image shows the newly made textures. The second image shows the CSITU while the third image shows the OSMU and the CAA.

Latest development on this slow-moving project of mine is the near completion of the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS). The main items left is the RL-10B-2 Nozzle Extension Deployment System (NEDS) and the propellant pressurization system gas bottles that live in the intertank space between the LOX tank (bottom) and the LH2 tank (top).

Then I'm looking for someone who is willing to provide a set of proper modules.

Here's the completed ICPS:

Any takers on the coding part?

The Obama administration sometimes acts in a funny way. They cancelled Ares V, a couple of years ago, later have approved SLS, which is essentially Ares V with a Saturn V painting scheme. Why to cancel Ares V from the beginning then??

I know this is not a SLS Paint Scheme debate thread, so lets just see the real thing when it comes out, until then, the NASA DRM, PPT, and PAO images will have to do, everything else is just speculation.

On a side note, the white and black checkerboard paint scheme is a high visibility scheme meant for ground camera tracking. It was mostly used on test launches, but in the Saturn V era, most vehicles carried it, as NASA was still testing the system through it's eventual cancelation. The Saturn V was never really considered a "Production" rocket.

FYI

Organic coatings primary purpose is to prevent corrosion.

Secondary considerations include but are not limited to; Visibility high or low, Heat reflectivity or absorption, Light reflect/absorb, aerodynamics when used in concert with aerodynamic filler puttys and adhesives, and as a sealant such as scuff/water resistant surface qualities. Of course there’s the obvious aesthetics.

Organic coatings add weight to any object, and in space systems weight is a major factor. In many cases paint is eliminated whenever possible for that very reason.

It's great to have it in Orbiter anyway. Do you plan to do the 120 tons version with the F1 engines powered liquid boosters ?

About the color, full white wouldn't be an heresy either. The only big problem with the B&W pattern is that the black part absorb a lot of heat. Which is especially bad for a vehicle that has a LOX/LH2 first stage (even more sensitive to heat that the LOX/Kerosene Saturn-V first stage). Any light color would be acceptable in fact. There have been light yellow variations of the Centaur stage as an exemple (but yes, a big rocket painted in light yellow (well, rather covered with a light yellow foam) would look a bit weird from an aesthetic point of view, at least IMHO).

The biggest change about external layer design from the Saturn-V era is that now insulation foam is used on wide scale, like on the Space Shuttle ET.

Not right now. Also, it's not a given that SLS will use them. They're just one of several possible choices for the advanced boosters. ATK for example has the Filament Wound Casing (FWC) derived SRMs that they're proposing to be used as the advanced boosters.

The core will be orange, with tracking targets here and there. No word on the boosters, most likely to be painted for corrosion control efforts as they will be recovered at sea like the STS SRBs.

The visualization team insists on painting the core, which is why we only get the white and black scheme in public releases.

Source = NASA Spaceflight L2. I subscribed today. It's nice what a few dollars will buy. Don't expect to get much from me, they got a lot of rules about reposting info, specs, and photos. I can't use the images as textures, but I can use them for reference and reproduce them as accurately as possible. I suspect I wont do much of that, as my project is already full of work. I didn't see anything new on the L2 site, just what we have here already.

There wasn't much info on the CST either, pretty much everything we already had.

I love the detail Dave. I myself, as a wanna-be modeler, look at your models and think to myself... Damm! I wish I could model like he does. Nice work as always.
