FWIW, I've never seen a decent comet before. The good ones in my recent memory, such as Lovejoy and McNaught, were in the southern hemisphere. PANSTARRS wasn't very impressive, and ISON even less so.

Just give it time......

Correction: The 1997 comet was named Comet Hale-Bopp.

Sorry, my mistake

ISON was kinda a pathetic comet to begin with, so this is a fitting end if so.

Pathetic? I wouldn't say pathetic, but rather average for a sungrazer.

At least I wouldn't call something that provided images like this "pathetic".

Been watching the Google/YouTube hangout with NASA Goddard.
The comments remind me of the level of scientific knowledge of the general public... It's not their fault, but it's still kind of painful. :p

"Pathetic" compared to expectations, even if the blown-up "brighter than the full Moon" expectations were way too high (which they were).

Though I really can't blame anyone for that, comets are notoriously unpredictable.

Is Mars pathetic because it never fulfills the various "bright as the full Moon" rumors at every opposition? There's no need to blame the comet for the ridiculously bloated expectations of the scientifically illiterate.

You're right of course, I guess I'm just a tad bit bummed out over not getting a good show out of it (who isn't)? I've simply always wanted to see a nice and bright comet.

Although that would be one heck of a show if Mars was as bright as the full moon.

Why so defensive ?
Afterall it was only a piece of rock and ice that in terms of previous comets was indeed somewhat pathetic.............

Besides the visual expectations, people tend to forget the potential scientific gains. Even if it broke up, it should still provide quite a bit of new data for that field.

The point is that I guess those who have interest in astronomy would understand this point, so the emotions are thrown at the point that whether it survives through the solar passage....

At least it was (very briefly) visible with the naked eye (though definitely not from where I live).....

Nobody is expecting to see Mars as big and bright as the full Moon on the Earth's sky, because they haven't seen it this big ever, but rather hearing this will be the "comet of the century" people expect to see another Hale-Bopp on the sky, which they saw not so long ago.

No. There's no evidence of it in the latest official SOHO LASCO C2 image, dated 2013/11/28 20:24 UT.

Try this:

I think that clump will at least survive for some time, if not that some of the nucleus is still in one piece.

I think the black and white photo is the same as the other one but it's turned down and without colour.

Survival? Doesn't appear to be up-to-date.

I think it's a doctored image as none of the official LASCO C2 images showed anything at that time. I have been watching them every so often and never saw anything after 1900 UT.
