Manual: Nobody reads that because our software has to be programmed in such a way that it's really, really intuitive because people are to lazy to read manuals. Just try a bit and it will work.

Am I doing this right?

If you don't give them a manual, you can't claim that they are using it wrong. ;)

How come I sometimes eat at McDonalds, and I sometimes eat pizza, and eat some "junk food" every day, and yet I'm not obese?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it is entirely possible for someone to be medically unwell at a normal weight. Mass is one of the least useful medical tests imaginable, and it doesn't give any insight into cardiovascular health or any of the other important factors in biochemistry that determine how healthy you really are.

Not that your diet is horrible, but a little bit of junk food every day isn't a great idea in the long run anyways.

Some (like me) cannot eat a single cherry without taking 35 kilograms. My friends can eat like 3 BigMacs at McDonalds and stay nice and atheltic.

Karma and DNA, I suppose ...

For me personally, activity level is a huge factor.

I actually worked at McDonald's for 7 years before moving into an IT career.

For 7 years I ate 2-3 meals per day there. My weight was stable, my cholesterol and blood pressure were perfect.

As soon as I took a more sedentary job in IT, eating less fast food and more healthy home cooking, I immediately began gaining weight, and my cholesterol began to rise. Blood pressure is still steady, but monitoring it closely with each visit. Doc said the difference is I was on my feet 8-10 hours per day running like a chicken with my head cut off, burning calories.

So far the only non-exercise change I've found that has helped me lose weight consistently is cutting out soft drinks of any kind. That, unfortunately, is a wagon I cannot seem to stay on.

Purchasing a bicycle this past fall and riding 2-3 times per week really made a huge difference. Now, with colder weather, no trainer for my bike or even a place to put it if I had one, the weight is coming back with a vengeance.

Activity, food consumption, food quality, genetics, even climate - lots of things affect your weight.

Hot climate: air conditioning on - less sweat - less energy spent - more weight.
Cold climate: regular exposure to cold air - growth of insulation fat - more weight.

Metabolism rates are different for different people.

Some people have intestinal parasites without realising it, so they eat truck loads but stay thin.

Eating habits. Some people are often hungry, and eat a lot.
Some people just enjoy the crisp and taste of food, so they eat all the time.

Upbringing.
A human (as almost any animal) adapt to the conditions he/she was in for the first few years of life. Often in non-obvious ways.

And so on, and so on.
Don't expect to just eat a lot to gain weight.

I've always had a high metabolism, and I've always chosen high-energy jobs (camp staff, door-to-door flyer delivery, baggage handler, loader at Home Depot). I've never had a weight issue. I still watch my blood pressure and cholesterol, since there is a less-than-stellar family history on both sides.
