Since we don't seem to have a dedicated thread for this year's Olympics, I decided to go ahead and make one. Any sort of news or discussion related to this year's Olympics can go here. Is anyone else planning on watching them? Or even going to see them in person maybe?

And of course, a link to the official website.

I go right past the Olympics site in Stratford every single day as its on my way to work.

When the Olympics happen I won't be able to get there because all the trains are commandeered for the Olympics.

My Father lives just a few miles away. He applied for tickets. Did you know that 70% of the tickets have gone to corporate people, MP's and others who don't deserve them? People like my father who have lived through several years of disruption and building work have to bid for 30% of the tickets. He didn't get a single one.

no, I'll be avoiding the expensive, corporate greed rubbish that calls itself 'Olympics 2012'.

Can't argue with that, I'm trying to get sponsorship to leave the country while its on.

well I live in Hoddesdon about 20 miles away to the north in Hertfordshire, and I couldn't have said it better myself , especially when we have a local housing crisis because they are commandeering our local housing for the olympic visitors!

Make sure your home is well locked up then if your near stratford or the squatters will move in!

Hotel prices in London have quadrupled. Air fares too, food will go up during the Olympics.

I really have no issue with it if the majority of people involved weren't using it to make a fast few pounds. The disruption is absolutely unforgivable all in the name of 'providing a good Olympics experience' - In other words of putting on a show whilst hiding the real problems underneath glitz and glamor.

Oh and the Olympic stadium has been built on ground LEASED from a gas company. this is land that was contaminated and the Government paid to clean up.

In other words, this gas company will get a free Stadium worth several million for nothing more than not using land that they decided to not use anyway. nice.

Apparently the ground was the site of a test reactor at some point in the past! (apparently being the key word) hence contamination if there's any truth in it, the british government and media are famous for not telling the full truth.

Peaple will be ripped off, after all this is rip off britain, its happening already and the games haven't even started yet!

ZION springs to mind!

I only watch the Olympics for the opening (and to a lesser extent, the closing) ceremonies.

Strange tune, reminds me of Roy Wood & Wizzard, for a bit, then it turns...quite sharply.

While we are talking (read: writing) about music, the official recordings of the national anthems for the Olympic 2012, was actually arranged by Philip Sheppard, the composer of the soundtrack to the documentary "In the Shadow of the Moon"
and "Cloud Songs", which was the soundtrack to the movie First Orbit
which featured voice recordings of the Vostok 1 flight combined with footage from ISS!

Today, the London rail network tested out it's Olympic crowd handling measures. The very latest in technology was used (btw, this is true):

Is this dual layer phase-shifted uncoated cardboard made of 50% recycled paper and 50% regrowing resources? Labelled with a solvent-free water-based marker pen? We had been talking about such technologies for years here, but never saw them put into use.

Well I'm looking forward to the Olympics! I'll be following cycling, swimming, diving, and track & field.

After poking fun at incidents on National Rail (always good for laughs!), here's something on a slightly less political note:

Although I would have liked to see 'em make one like the London2012 Olympic logo... :shifty:

Thats quite clever, surprised the IOC hasn't banned it!

Nah, they'll just try to claim royalties from every molecule bearing the logo :P

For what it's worth myself and Mrs. D. have tickets to see the rowing and sailing which sound like they'll be quite good and we're looking forward to it, neither of which is in London which is always a bonus!
