News NASA Supporters Hold Bake Sales for Planetary Exploration

Maybe they get the money to order a screw for the next interplanetary probe.

Let's be honest here, to get $300m, they're basically going to have to kill the domestic US cupcake market. Is this morally right? I'm not sure. That's a lot of small traders that are going to have to go out of business.

It's a free market, dontcha know. They have a right to boot out the competition :P

 I'm confident in the ability of the average US citizen to eat a significant number of cupcakes.

Every dollar helps ! :P

And I think its more about showing to everyone their delusion about space programs underfunding. So good initiative, and much much better than doing nothing and bashing NASA/politicians. ;)

It's not about the money actually raised, it's a publicity stunt to appeal to the powers- that-be to try to get a better slice of the real money.

In that regard, this is no more stupid than say, Relay for Life.

Discover Magazine - Bad Astronomy: Shining shoes for NASA:
{...} Alan Stern — head of the new Horizons Pluto probe already on its way to the tiny world — decided to try something radical: raise public awareness about all this by holding various "fund raisers" across the nation — bake sales and car washes! Yes, you read that right: planetary scientists will be washing cars and giving away cookies to help save NASA. It’s not really about raising money, it’s about getting peoples’ attention on this. Folks will get a chance to talk to scientists and find out what NASA does, and why it’s important.

{...}

What's next? Garage sale?

In all seriousness, it's too bad the public can't donate to NASA... I would.

So, has anyone gone to one of these events?

Like I said on NSF. Join the club of "CUT CUT CUT" Congress politics that seems hellbent lately on limiting the success of small budget high efficiency programs to find money to fund bloated oldspace and old companies.

The unmanned programs are really coming into their own now. Yet they have a big issue when it comes to congress "WHERE ARE MAH JOBS FOR MAH STATE!" They don't get to play the jobs card when they go over budget while people involved go to work just to use Facebook. Thus the goal of making your project do more with less is key. Instead of a bad thing with oldspace.

The "Safe, Simple, Soon" Horsecrap already cost us potential missions. Unmanned does not need more gutting.

Except for certain "big" Telescopes trying to act the "too big to fail" part.

If you guys aren't buying these cupcakes, you're part of the problem. Put your money where your mouth is!
