An elementary school principal in Massachusetts has banned fall holidays, saying they’re insensitive, MyFoxBoston reported Friday. Anne Foley, the principal at Kennedy School in Somerville, Mass., sent an email to teachers warning them about celebrating Thanksgiving, the Boston Herald reported.
"When we were young we might have been able to claim ignorance of the atrocities that Christopher Columbus committed against the indigenous peoples," Kennedy School Principal Anne Foley wrote.
"We can no longer do so. For many of us and our students celebrating this particular person is an insult and a slight to the people he annihilated. On the same lines, we need to be careful around the Thanksgiving Day time as well."
Teachers have already been told not to let students dress up for Halloween.
Parents told MyFoxBoston that they felt the principal was overreacting.
“My kids were brought up with Halloween and whatever have you. She has no right to tell these kids they can’t have it,” one woman told the station.
“The children, they need to express themselves and be children. Don’t take holidays and fun time away from them. They have so much homework. They don’t have enough play time,” another said.
Superintendant Tony Pierantozzi told The Herald that Halloween is “problematic” because of connections to witchcraft.
“I don’t think they should not be able to celebrate these holidays I mean this country was formed with the idea that everything is a free country, and they should be able to celebrate these holidays,” a Somerville woman told MyFoxBoston.
Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone, who has three kids at Kennedy, also weighed in.
“I’m the son of Italian immigrations, so I take Columbus Day very near and dear, and I’m proud that he discovered America and that America’s named after another Italian,” Curtatone said. “If we ignore and we don’t want to talk about it, if we want to stifle debate, then we’re ignoring history.”
He also added that he was planning on being in full costume at Somerville’s annual Halloween parade, which residents said is one of the largest in the greater Boston area.
A few Kennedy students also said they disagreed with the ban.
“I don’t like that. I’ve celebrated Halloween since I was a little kid and I don’t think it’s right to ban it,” one Kennedy student told MyFoxBoston.
“I think that it’s kind of ridiculous because we should celebrate what we want to celebrate. We shouldn’t be told what we shouldn’t by other people,” another said.
The situation even caught the attention of U.S. senator for Massachusetts, Scott Brown.
“Let’s not take political correctness to the extreme. Let the kids in Somerville enjoy Halloween,” Brown tweeted Friday.
Seriously? is she this really stupid. Id say she should move to russia and see what no holidays are like. this is what liberals are. taking away our freedoms....

Well, she could set the example: find out whose tribe the ground her school is built on belongs to, and give it back to them. Then she can resign and find a new job.

Russia? No holidays? Aren't you kidding? They have introduced "experimental" five-term year down here, and schoolchildren have no time to ramp up studying... Re: Thanksgiving. A better solution would be to add more history classes dealing with the total war against Indians.

NB: the word "Fox" in "MyFoxBoston" should be a warning that brain damage is probable after reading the news.

stupid:censored: people like her should be put in a special place, where escape is improbable, and where you would spend a predetermined amount of time based n the nature and severity of your stupidity. Unfortunately no such place exists.

No one can get upper hand above Russia in celebrating holidays: ALL THE COUNTRY (except emergency services etc.) stops working and celebrating New Year & Christmas for twelve days every year! Kids have their entire three summer months free plus three more week-long holidays in-between, and that is added to state holidays.

You must have heard that Orthodox church has banned celebrating Halloween & St. Patrick's Day here, because they must be thinking that western churches who endorse these holidays are in the grip of Satan, but that's a different matter. We still have very many holidays.

muslims pray like five times a day. Going by her logic, the people are worshipping people who have lived there for thousands of years should stop.

Ah, America... Land of unlimited posibilities, as it was sometimes called in europe. Noone ever thought about the backdraw that unlimited possibilities means that at one point impossibly silly things are going to happen.

Potential for human stupidity is infinite, regardless of the country...

This is one principal, statistically speaking there are enough principalships in this country that a few of them will end up filled by morons.

At least she actually shows up for work, principals in my town's school corporation are notorious for serving on enough committees and taking enough personal days that they only spend one or two days a week in the school they run.

Quote "When we were young we might have been able to claim ignorance of the atrocities that Christopher Columbus committed against the indigenous peoples," unquote.
I have a feeling that "Chris the 'Bus" as he was known to his friends, never actually set foot on the land that is now continental USA. Thanksgiving hails from a whole different set of settlers! Pretty bad when someone from the other side of the pond is less ignorant then this Principle.

The Spanish Empire in the form of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella signed a contract with Christopher Columbius to explore the New World. The Spanish Empire was Roman Catholic. Both the Aztec's and The Roman Catholic Church practiced Human sacrifice! The Aztec's converted to Catholicism, perfect match! Many new churches built in Mexico.

Thanks, Guys!

Oh, relax, it was from Fox News, back in 2011. Did anything happen in the past nine years that justifies even a minor raise in blood pressure?

Well, I for one welcomed stumbling over an old post by ghostrider. I miss the guy... Hope nothing's happened to him, he didn't exactly have the safest job...

Thats strange that you stumbled on this topic. I suggest this should be locked since it is 9 years old and it doesnt really matter anymore

Yeah, I last saw him in July, pretty long time ago. And its also the year 2020, which is a pretty safety risk right now.
