Here are my results with a Dell Inspiron 2650 with 128 MB's of RAM, 16 MB's video memory, and a 1.2/1.7 P4 M processor. I looked up some XP performance tweaks that are commonly found on the internet and I'm running everything in Parameters and Visual Effects except specular water effects and distance fog in 16-bit mode. Distance fog reminds me of smog in the L.A. basin.

Here are some screenshots:

fact: The installer for one of my favorite linux distributions "chokes" unless it has 256 MB's of memory to work with.
fact: The Debian netinstall cd works with as little as 64 MB of RAM and is only 188 MB in size. Plus you only install what you need or want. It was installed on this machine last night. There are others to be sure. Google/Bing and you'll find one that works for you. I'm switching to Debian from Ubuntu when I resume work on improving Wine's ability to support Orbiter on the Linux and Mac platforms. Debian uses alsa for sound by default instead of pulseaudio which conflicts with Wine (which is similar in nature to the JAVA runtime environment and allows Windows applications to run on Linux or Mac). I won't submit bug reports to Wine with this particular machine. But I'm installing and running Orbiter 2010 on Debian today for kicks and giggles. A couple more Screenshots will be forthcoming for contrast and comparison using a duplicate copy of the same install used in xp.

the computer ive used it on for the whole time ive had orbiter. a 2006(?) Hp Pavillion. With the worst OS ever. - Windows Vista 32 bit.

When I first tried Orbiter, it was Orbiter 2005 on a 2001-era machine with a 1 Ghz processor, 256 megs of ram, a generic GPU with no dedicated video memory, and either WinME or 2k (I forget if I first tried Orbiter before my Dad upgraded to 2k).

Eventually I'll try running Orbiter on some really really old hardware. I suppose I could try as low as a 486, but I bet the instruction mix of that processor wouldn't work too well. I could then move it up to a pentium 60, and perhaps a pentium mmx or even a p-pro 160. I can get the ram pretty low. These are experiments slated for the future though.

The first computer i ran Orbiter on had something like a 733 Mhz processor, 128 MB SDRAM, and 32 MB video. Worked well if I used lower resolution textures and didn't turn stuff like horizon haze and water reflections on.

It was the 2006 edition of Orbiter, if I remember correctly.

That's about what I used to run 2006 on. But with WinXP as the OS. Ran well as long as I didn't have a high res planet/base texture. Tried 2010 on it, but MFD weren't working right. I don't even have that computer anymore.

Not too much, it was the same computer as I use now. 1.66 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD, WinXP and I still have no idea what GPU I have  It ran 2010 fine with high resolution textures for Earth. (since then I have upgraded my computer, of course).

I use Orbiter 2010P1 on a Dell GX260 with Windows XP service pack 3, 1 GB RAM and idk if this is a factor but with 1.60 GB of 18.9 GB hard disk space.

Identify your video card...

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager & Double Click on or expand Display Adapters. That should give you some indication of what type of video card you have. If not try looking up your system specs at the manufacturer's website or install one that meets Orbiter's system requirements to be sure if all else fails.

I once ran Orbiter 2006 on my old Windows 95 (not sure of specs) Limited success, worked every now and then and with increasing graphical glitching until total CTD
