Here are my results with a Dell Inspiron 2650 with 128 MB's of RAM, 16 MB's video memory, and a 1.2/1.7 P4 M processor. I looked up some XP performance tweaks that are commonly found on the internet and I'm running everything in Parameters and Visual Effects except specular water effects and distance fog in 16-bit mode. Distance fog reminds me of smog in the L.A. basin.
Here are some screenshots:
fact: The installer for one of my favorite linux distributions "chokes" unless it has 256 MB's of memory to work with.
fact: The Debian netinstall cd works with as little as 64 MB of RAM and is only 188 MB in size. Plus you only install what you need or want. It was installed on this machine last night. There are others to be sure. Google/Bing and you'll find one that works for you. I'm switching to Debian from Ubuntu when I resume work on improving Wine's ability to support Orbiter on the Linux and Mac platforms. Debian uses alsa for sound by default instead of pulseaudio which conflicts with Wine (which is similar in nature to the JAVA runtime environment and allows Windows applications to run on Linux or Mac). I won't submit bug reports to Wine with this particular machine. But I'm installing and running Orbiter 2010 on Debian today for kicks and giggles. A couple more Screenshots will be forthcoming for contrast and comparison using a duplicate copy of the same install used in xp.
