In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Yuri's flight, I thought we could use this thread to post pics or video or news of the celebrations that will occur all over the world, or to make our own celebration. Also, pics or video of Vostok-1.

The mini-satellite Kedr will be transmitting several messages related to his flight. Amateur radio stations will be able to hear it.

If only Yuri were here to see what an impact he's done. Godspeed, comrade :salute:! We will celebrate you and those who have followed for time to come!

Google seems to be celebrating as well:

Check out the site. They have an animated version where the R-7 takes off...

And we shall keep celebrating it 'till it's 100th anniversary, and beyond. 108 minutes that changed the world.

Let's not forget the 30 years after STS-1. But there's already a thread for that.

Поехали! :salute:

My video tribute, with dedication to Suzy for introducing me to so much information on the Russian Space program and to SiberianTiger for passing me the original music track, Trava U Doma, the anthem of Russian spaceflight since the 1980s

Just watched an ISS pass this morning, the dawn of Gagarin day!

Hail Youri Alexeïevitch Gagarine and Sergueï Pavlovitch Korolev ! The cosmonaut and the chief engineer were really close friends, and it was somewhat a dilemna for Korolev to send him on Vostok 1, using hardware that was quite unreliable then. But they suceeded, shall their names be never forgotten !

Three Cheers for Yuri Gagarin, Sergey Korolyov and all people who contributed to man's exploration to the ultimate frontier!

Godspeed. Thinking of it, spaceflight has gone a long way in half a century. Perhaps even more than atmospheric flight has gone in the same time frame.
