Following an absurdly popular request ( http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=20253 ), i've revived an old experiment of mine, concerning ASCII rendering in OGLAClient.

Here's the beast, for Orbiter 100608 (might work in latter, haven't checked or updated):
http://orbides.1gb.ru/orbf/ogla_for_2010P0_ascii.zip
(F7-G to disable, or in cfg file)

And, i sure understand now what's so popular - it's ridiculous, yet it's somehow fun.

See for yourself, if OGLA proves as broken as ever:

...Why so small? Ok, let's go FullHD:

Awesome! Perhaps not very pragmatic, but awesome! :D

Though, err... where is the picture of The Probe? Shall we not render his antenna (blest be their transmissions) in ASCII glory, as well? :hailprobe:

Finally, when someone asks "But is there an ASCII client?" we can reply "There certainly is!", if we append the "sort of" is up to us :P

Thank you Artlav

That is truly the most awesome thing I've seen all year so far. Thank you Artlav!

I still wish we had a real ASCII renderer.
There is nothing like running a few instances on my shell and do some missions in real time :D
Hm. What would constitute a "real" ASCII renderer?
It have to have a back-end 3D renderer, or it would be very schematic.

There is one option - use my software OpenGL renderer, which on the given resolution of 160x128 or so should be pretty quick for rendering a nice basic scene, and post-process from here. That might actually work.

If only Orbiter was capable of surrendering window control to the client! That would have been literally a run-in-console-ASCII-space-flight. And, it would run on any Linux that supports wine and qemu.

Android cell phone with Orbiter, anyone?

The other probe is here.
Hail the spootnik!
Hail the foreprobe!

I hope it will get updated soon!
Updates? What updates? It's a fire-and-forget thing.
Besides, OGLA itself badly needs to be blown up and re-assembled - 3 years of catching up to changing specs is not good.

Schematic is actually what I would be looking for. Rendering the wireframe directly with symbols like | or /. And of course rendering text as text.
Given a regular 80x25 terminal, this would only be any fun with a scrollable virtual terminal several times that size.

This is by no means a request. As you said, true terminal fun is not to be had currently.

I didn't even knew it was possible. It reminds me Matrix, when the rebels say they are experienced enough to see the virtual reality through the raw code scrolling on the terminal screens.
