The project has been discontinued, but is still offered here for people that would like to play with it. The major reasons for discontinuation are lacking time, and also that there is just no way to integrate this into orbiter in a propper way. It would always be severly limited by that.

Travel the Galaxy for less than 30 altair-dolars a day! IN ORBITER!
 

This is version 0.6.2 of the procedural galaxy generator that enables Orbinauts to travel a complete, moderately believable galaxy in Orbiter (despite all the efforts I made to make the generator accurate, this shouldn't be mistaken for an astronomical program. It belongs into the realm of hard science fiction). 

 

Extensive documentation included in the download! Please read the configuration guide in the manual before complaining about too long exporting times or lousy textures.

KNOWN ISSUES:

- When run as an Orbiter plug-in, Orbiter must be executed in windowed mode or full-screen window. True fullscreen will result in a CTD.

- Keyboard might not work in the Galaxy Window. To resolve, move mousecursor over Orbiter window and press any key.

- Texture export might take ages. To resolve, get a high performance GPU (shader model 4.1 or better), or lower texture levels in OGalaxy.cfg

Very good! I like the new custom system feature! I love the addition of custom systems. I'll get right to adding a ton of known Exoplanet systems!

Also, this thing went online a lot faster than expected. I expected it to take 20 hours at least...

Yes, the development thread wasn't loading before (my internet connection was practically dead), but now it's loading fairly quickly. Off to post my bug reports I go!

!!!HAZARD WARNING!!!

I just noticed that, due to a fragement of old code, unused textures don't get deleted from your HardDrive as they should. I'm fixing this right now and will have a patch up as soon as it gets through the security of OrbitHangar, which might take a while. In the meantime, try not to target too many different systems, or delete their textures manually from your textures folder.

I am REALLY sorry for this inconvienience, I certainly didn't intend to spam your harddrive with unused texture files!

And since barely anyone ever reads the manual, I decided to update the description. The download hasn't changed, so no need to re-download. It just seemed prudent to put the credits where they can best be seen, although I'm a bit late. I hope none of the contributors have felt offended by my mistake, I'm really thankfull for all the help I'm getting with this, and I couldn't have pulled it off on my own!

For the small contribution I made, the direct mentioning in the manual was already fine for me. Far away from being offended at all!

It was my pleasure to help you out there, since I see much potential in OrbiterGalaxy. Might be the next OrbiterSound-class addon (in the sense of absolute, undeniable must-have)...

BTW: I still keep a VCS repository with your changes (code at first, now tracking binaries). If you need it, just give me a call.

The long wait has finally ended, the new version is here (even slightly before tuesday! :lol:)

I have tried to implement as many of the suggestions for the GUI as posible. There's a main navigation now that is always visible and lets you switch between the Starmap, Galaxy map and system overview. The main commands in the system overview have been fixed at the bottom of the screen so you don't have to scroll all the way down to target a system, and I've added filter sensitive Prev/Next system buttons to quickly browse through stars of certain types in the currently visible cube. Also, the drop-out GUI is now indicated by a blue area at the screen edge.

But as many times, the major improvements were not actually done by me. Artlavs texture generator has come a long way in terms of stability and compatibility, or at least we hope so. Please let me know wheather the black textures are a thing from the past in the development thread.

Next on the plan are Jump routes and consistency, so you'll be able to leave stuff lying around the galaxy without it getting stolen by Javas every time you leave the system... :shifty:

Oh, I forgott to mention... this is a full version, not a patch. There were too many dependencies that have changed to put this up as a patch. You should be save by just overwriting old files if you still have an older version lying around, although it might be recommendable to erase your cache.txt and delete all old textures. The systems don't look the same anymore anyways.

How do you travel? It wont let me target anything or use any of the buttons.

there is a problem that the map won't react to keypresses if you aven't used the keyboard with focus on orbiter first, but I never heard of buttons not reacting to mouseclicks... ?

the process of targetting systems and travelling to them is quite thouroughly explained in the manual, but if your map window doesn't react to mouseinputs there's something very strange. Did you try running Orbiter in windowed mode?

The map works in windowed mode thankfully, however the TGT button does not work. What I tried was using the map to target a star (Which said it worked), but then after trying to open the map, RUNTIME ERROR!

Please fix? :(

I'm not sure if I posted this in the right place or not but I got a feature request for orbiter galaxy: is to get the orbiter galaxy built into the next version of orbiter.
That would be Spaceway.
Now with TransX and SC3.
