So, on Thursday was my 18th birthday. Nothing really interesting happened because it was all planned for the next day (which would have been yesterday for me). We had it all planned out: We would go to a pizza place before hand, then to laser tag from 8 to midnight (really good deal), then sledding afterward. Nothing really went as planned.
I needed to pick up 3 people to go to the Pizza place (called Marty's pizza). The plan was to be there by 6. I had to wait for my sister to come home from work so I would have the car. She got home at around 5:30, so I wanted to get going relatively quickly (it would take 10 minutes to pick up people, then another 20 to get to Marty's). However, my sister insisted that I take her to Taco Bell because she was hungry. Me, being me, did it. By the time I got her back home, it was 5:50, so i quickly called everyone telling them I'd be late. I could tell things weren't going to be so great when I picked up one of my friends, and he was hostile towards his ex-girlfriend (they've been broken up for nearly a year).
So, I get to Marty's, and thankfully we had a table all ready for us (we had 8 people there). We sat down, and I had a coupon to order some pizza's. That actually went pretty well. We ordered 2 14-inch x 26-inch pizzas (35.6 cm x 66 cm), 4 pitchers of soda, and a mass of garlic bread. Eating was not to bad, we had plenty of left over, so we took it home. Total amounted to 63.04 USD, and I gave the waitress a 20 USD tip. By the time we left, It was only 7:15, we didn't want to show up super early to laser tag, so we went to the mall, hung around for a bit, then left.
I'm used to taking a certain route to laser tag, and the mall was completely off the route. I had two options: Take the long way, but get us there confidently, or try to take a route I didn't know and hopefully get us there quicker. I decided to choose the second option. I had my friend following me, so I drove off in the direction which I thought would intersect a street I knew. Turns out, I took a wrong turn and ended up going on the freeway.
The everyone in the car knew we weren't going in the right direction, so the obvious thing to do is to say "Oh god, we aren't going in the right direction", "Oh god, this is gonna suck", "We're gonna be late", instead of, you know, giving the driver some direction to go. Eventually, we got off the freeway and I called my dad to see if he could get us directions. That didn't turn out because I was way out of the way. Eventually, I hit a street called Les Paul. I recognized that name, so I figured I'd turn on it. I could go left or right, and I chose left. My friend (who was in girl scouts) said we were going north. She was very confident because she had a good sense of direction.
We drove, and drove, and drove, and drove, until we hit an interstate. I turned off, called my dad again, and tried to tell him where the hell we were. He said to look at the stars, find the constellation Orion, and since Orion faces south (where I live), i could get directions from there. Orion had been to the left of us. Which means we were heading West, not North. After some deliberating with my dad, he told me to drive South to get to some road I knew. As I'm driving away, I look in my rear-view mirror to see a car pulling off to the side of the road. I didn't get a good look, and I figured my friend was still behind me. After some more driving, we called my dad again, and he said to turn back. I pulled off, but that car behind me kept driving. So we called my friend to see where he was.
His car has broken down. That car I saw pulling off to the side of the road was him. We drove back to meet up with him. When we got there, he told us that the steering column of his car had broke. He had no steering, so we're wondering what the hell to do. We called my friend who had a truck, so we figured he could just tow it out. Several people had stopped to ask if we were okay, and one person told us he was going to call the sherrif to come out here, because we were in a bad spot. We were. 55 MPH (88.5 KPH) road, and we were on the back side of a hill. After the cop showed up, they talked a little, and eventually, the cop called a tow truck. About 15 minutes later, the tow truck came, and gave my friend even more bad news: Half of his engine had fallen out. His car was totaled.
The car got towed to a near-by grocery store so that another one could pick it up and bring it closer to home. Total cost for the tow: 105 USD (85 for it to come out, 3 per mile). My other friends (who we were going to laser tag with) had come out, and after we had gotten to the grocery store, and the cop gave us permission, we all drove to my friends house to chill out. We watched zombie land, and got home at about 1 AM the next morning.
Such a nice birthday party. Moral of the story: Always, always, ALWAYS have a map in the car.
