I'm completely dutch but my grandfather was born Indonesia as a colonial. I've got a family tree that dates back to 1600 in the dutch village of Kethel.

maybe about 1/16th German. The rest is Dutch, for the last 3 or 4 centuries. About 7/16 from the east of the Netherlands, < 1/4 from the northeast and > 1/4 from the west (Holland).

I have family members in other countries (Canada, South Africa, Australia), but they're not my ancestors. It's quite certain I should have far ancestors from other areas on this globe, but that's too long ago and no known documents of those times have survived. Probably some of my ancestors already lived here when the Netherlands didn't exist yet.

... and I've come from exactly the same spot only 32 years ago.

The Genographic Project suffers from many cargo cult science problems, especially they have a strong believe in the accuracy of DNA markers, without really understanding them (With markers alone, I can't prove with certainty, who is your grand-grandfather - and often only with some uncertainty, who is your parent). Also I can't find anything on their website that they use mitochondrial DNA as input, which is just strange as this special DNA gives a much stronger indication of ancestry over many generations.

Well, according to current models, the species appeared 200kya, and left africa 60kya, which I think is where he got that figure from. (Also, while the most recent common female ancestor of humanity is supposed to have lived 170kya, the most recent common male anscestor is supposed to have lived about 60 kya).

Also, you mix up ethnicity (which is rather a result of culture than of genetics) with species. And did I mention that we still have no scientific definition of species?

I think he's trying to say that "ethnicity" is an illusion and we're all the same "ethnicity" because we're all the same species. I don't exactly agree with that, but there are alot of people who think racism automatically follows from people dividing themselves up into ethnicities, and such views are common among such people.

OK - let me see if I can get this right. Essentially, I'm 3/4 English and 1/4 Irish. That's the short version.

The LONG version has to cater for me also being: 1/16 Australian Aborigine, 1/16 Native American and 1/32 Greek. Not quite sure how I'd work that all in.

Yes, but I can't agree to such views. Somebody can expect me to be not automatically his enemy, but he can't force me to be his friend. And that is what I consider ethnicity. The group which I chose to belong to. If I think I belong to humanity as whole, without special preferences, well. It sounds a bit lazy, as you can't even define a common language, other than some male grunting.

Better some more special groups, over which you can have a definition of your culture. I am sure no German - all that is needed for being German, is the ability to speak German and be citizen of Germany (Sprachraum and nationality). How boring. This means being the same as some strange Bavarians or a east German Nazi.

Ugly thought. But I can speak the local dialect, feel comfortable in local pubs and prefer tea over coffee and like my tea with rock sugar. And I was almost born with Friesennerz and rubber boots. I know why the land is so flat and which geographic feature ends the flatlands. I have seen Haitabu, and know what Torfrock is. And I like my beer with swing top.
