Heard about this on another website and I thought it would be interesting to hear other people's opinions about it.

http://www.youtube.com/blog?month=12&year=2008
(Scroll down to the "A YouTube for All of Us" entry.)

Apparently, YouTube has decided to "algorithmically demote" videos that contain things like words and free expression. I think this is ridiculous since this will leave most of the average user's videos in the dust while YouTube/Google promotes whatever videos they want.

I don't think this is a bad move, there is to much sex(Suggested and implied) in society anyway

Youtube is a private entity run by Google. They can do whatever they want to as long as it does not infringe international law or laws in the regions where they are incorporated or where thier servers are co-located. People misunderstand when they believe they have any freedom rights on private forums such as this or youtube. The people who run things set the rules. If you don't agree with the rules, use something else. Pretty simple. No media hysteria drama needed. Remember that websites are services, not rights. It really urks me when people get all preachy about interenet rights and freedom. There are no universal rights or freedom on the internet. Every single place you go has proprietary rulsets. :P

Actually, the problem is more, that among the sex content are many spammers, who put a pornographic picture as preview and then show their scams.

I think youtube should be as much sex free as possible... there are already pornographic youtube clones, which are easier to be made children safe...

That is true, but YouTube seems to have this say one thing, do another policy. YouTube use to be different, but I guess all good things must come to an end.

Oh what a pity. What did you want to talk about? Your favorite chapter of the Kamasutra? ;)

You still have more freedom of speech on Youtube, as on many radio stations. Which is something good for something of it's dominance.

Slightly OT, but one would think with the saturation of sex on the internet that kids would be ambivolent to it. It would sort of be ignoring reality to think otherwise. Kids don't grow up in a sterile environment. The internet is 99.999% worthless crap, sex on the internet just being a portion of it...

If there was a truely effective internet filter all you'd ever see is this:

I didn't see anything that really limits free speech. If you aren't intelligent enough to make your point without resorting to profanity or pornography then you aren't worth listening to anyway.

Personally I think this is a great move from Youtube. I'm getting really annoyed nowadays when I click on some video only to find out it's a "snapshot" image placed for a few frames right at the midpoint...

Too much time and precious bandwidth wasted on those immature ploy to "ramp up the hit count".

It is not only sex, it is also A LOT of rubbish presented via Youtube and a place of morons partly. Comments should be impossible generally. It's always annoying to watch NASA stuff while there are people who mention that everything NASA does is fake (nobody ever went into space... blah), just as one example.

It's a free market. If youtube does something people don't like, someone will start a rival website for them to migrate to. As long as the internet remains unregulated, there will always be someplace cool to go.

The coolest thing about youtube is that it is pretty much wide-open and that there isn't much sex on it. Complaining about comments or that some videos are crap is really out of line, since you view it for free anyway.

I don't know why you'd upload sex videos to YouTube anyway. There are sites just like YouTube which focus on that sort of thing. If that's what you want to see, go to those sites.

When I'm not looking for pr0n, I don't want to see it. Keep YouTube clean.

By the same token, when I am looking for pr0n, i don't want to see a video about a ferret licking a jalapeno (go look it up, it's quite funny actually), that'll just completely ruin the mood. That's what the pr0n video sites are for. All pr0n without the clutter.

Not that I look for pr0n....

Nobody looks for pr0n. It just gets transported to your PC in the overhead and you need special pr0n filter to extract it.

I agree, the internet is vast enough and unregulated enough where completely banning such things from YouTube will not hurt anyone. It'll also help clean up the site a fair amount. I'm certainly of the opinion that this is a good move on their part. If you want to see the things they are removing, go look for them. But honestly, most people (including myself) would rather stay away from such garbage.
