It's a cultural thing... Switzerland is even worse in that respect. How high your salary is is considered at least as intimate a question as "what did you and your wife do last night". In higher positions it is common that you are not allowed to disclose your pay except to official sources and closest family.

I've always been taught that you don't talk about how much money you're making to others, unless they're close friends or family...

I don't know why really... I guess it's a mild, but widespread paranoia
