Lewis Hamilton started his United States Grand Prix weekend in the best possible way with an impressive performance in first practice.
Hamilton, who must beat Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday to close a 33-point deficit, was comfortably fastest.
The world champion ended up 0.315 seconds quicker than Rosberg after being fastest throughout the session.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen was third fastest but two seconds off the pace.

Must be lining up his retirement job.

Let's see what happens in quali. It's Hammer Time!

Well predicted!

Lewis Hamilton beat Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to pole position at the United States Grand Prix.
It could be a crucial achievement for Hamilton, who needs to beat Rosberg in the race on Sunday to revive his faltering championship hopes.
Hamilton, who was 0.216 seconds ahead, trails by 33 points with 100 available.
Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo beat team-mate Max Verstappen to third, ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel.

Surely hope there will be some wheel to wheel action between Ham and Ros. Preferably with Max behind collecting the win in the end.

Looking for some adhesive wheel to track action off the start for Lewis this time (i.e. please don't screw up the start again Lewis). It would be a nice thing to see both silver arrows fighting each other in a straight fight. Haven't seen that for a while (and it's usually wheel to wheel racing)

Yeah, I think Lewis has had enough screwed up starts (either wheelspin or bogging down) for the season. His sector 1 for pole in quali was ridiculous! It sounds like Verstappen was admonished in the drivers' meeting and the rule clarification on movement under braking was directed at him. With notice served on him it remains to be seen if he will pay any attention to it. He's a great talent driving at the limit. It would be a shame for him to cause an accident and generate a reputation that could tarnish his career. COTAS is a great track to see a GP. Turn 1 is amazing. I'm looking forward to an exciting race.

Final podium: Hamilton, Rosberg, Ricciardo. Kinda boring race, to be honest.

Don't know about that. The Red Bull's didn't have the power to run with the Mercedes so their tire strategies were screwed from the start. The front three were almost set, the fun was watching how the rest of the top 10 duked it out!

Yeah maybe - I just couldn't remember much wheel-to-wheel racing, nor big wipe-outs. Ric was on a super-soft start, so he needed to jump one or both Mercs. He got Nico, but Nico got it back in a VSC pit-stop. Ho-hum. Max was having a good race until his gearbox gave up. I remember a bit of Alonso scrapping, and Button for a while, and some Renaults going round together for ever, but that's about it. Ferrari tire strategy seemed broken (at least Seb was in too many times, and poor Kimi had a failed tire stop knocking him out).
