Anyone else watch this movie yet?
I saw the original just a couple days before in my Computer Programming class.
I noticed how much a knowledge of computer science helps when watching it, so I was afraid that the new movie would be too dumbed down.
But this movie vastly exceeded all my expectations. The story, graphics, and soundtrack were all amazing. The DJs in the movie reminded me of Daft Punk, but I didn't notice until after the movie that Daft Punk were the genuises who MADE the soundtrack. I would totally buy the soundtrack IF I had theater surround sound.
The graphics were impressive of course. It was all totally realistic, with the young Jeff Bridges being the only thing not absolutely perfect. (but still amazing)
I'd just like to promote the movie and ask who else has seen it, how they enjoyed it or what criticisms they may have. Avoid spoilers please. I couldn't guess the story as I watched it. (though I could somewhat guess the script)

Let me describe the new movies story.

If a regular movie, like The Tourist was a novel, the movie Tron: Legacy is a paragraph. This doesn't mean the movie sucks or that I hate it. I loved it and have seen it twice... so far. What it means is that there is no plot development or come waving story or any details or intricacies, or any grand meaning of life stuff, it is a very narrow extremely simple plot device. And nothing is explored in great depth. The frizbie fight, light cycle game, and all is just there for the sake of being there, and then they move on, and its like that trough the whole move. It is (the story) built for the today's mind of an A.D.D. 12 year old boy. However I still like the film, because its Tron, and any Tron is better than no Tron. And I absolutely loved the visuals, I loved the art direction, I loved the sets, and the costumed. The music was mind blowing, quite literally. I love Daft Punk. I could associate with the characters, and could sympathize with them. There is a clear good, and a clear evil, none of that America the world police you see in many action films today. I just wish this 2 hour movie had a story. There is such a huge untapped potential here.

In the trailer you see awesome locations and sets, and you naturally think "oh this is going to be so super awesome", "I see they are going to do some awesome stuff here, cant wait to see what happens in this set". And when you actually watch it, they just pass from one set to the other, never even remotely going back. So once you see the light cycle, absorb it, because you will never see it again. So goes for everything in this movie. It's just swoosh, bing, bang, boom, done. They had such HUUUUGE potential between that girl and Flyn's son. And millions of other things, but like all things in this movie, they just lightly touch on it and move on, for the fear that your A.D.D. might kick in any millisecond.

Because for heavens sake, might you actually detect that there might be some story here, and and God forbid you might end up having to use your brain to think!! Heavens no!!!

Now excuse me wile I go see the movie for the 3rd time and dream of what could have been, had they had me flesh out their paragraph of a story.

I thought it was awesome but I definitely share some of Turbinators views. The story was actually BETTER than I thought it would be but not as good as what I could then imagine it SHOULD BE!!!! I watched it with a really open mind only hoping it didn't suck. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, if anything because it was so great to watch all that re-imagined Tron goodness. My final conclusion was that the plot was a little cliche but they stayed very true to the "legacy" of the movie and didn't turn the Tron universe into something else which usually infuriates me when some story universe gets overhauled for everything its worth until it is unrecognizable. Tron was VERY recognizable! My main and biggest overall complaint was the omission of Tron!!! He plays such a small part in the story I was actually quite disappointed in this despite all else...

I saw it and I loved the music and visuals (minus CLU *shudder*) true that the plot did have some holes, and it was a bit disappointing to watch it at IMAX when almost none of the scenes seem to be 3D anyway, I loved it nonetheless, and after watching clips of the first one, I intend to stay away from it. (Sorry to all you fans of the old movie :P)

Edit: Funny thing is before we saw it, I kept trying to convince my dad that it would suck.
We still argue about the CLU CGI though.

Edit2: In my opinion the best movie of 2010, although, come to think of it, I didn't watch that many movies...

I watched the first one the following day, and while I wasn't completely disappointed I was sort of...underwhelmed. But that probably happened after hearing quite often how much of a classic movie it was :) Still, I advise to watch the original if you are going to see it, ESPECIALLY if you can't watch the new one in original language. "Users" for whatever reason was dubbed as "Creatives" in Italian, so stuff didn't make sense.

I watched it, but as soon as I left the cinema/theater I forgot the most of it. I remember only the beginning, the end, and two ladies, unlike the 1982 movie which I remember better, even that I watched it last time like a year ago. It's like other recent movies made only to show 3D effects. At least here they don't dub movies for theaters, and subscripts didn't disturb me much either.

Bad me for not noticing there was another thread open...

Anyway, I loved the movie. Yes, there were some plot holes and stuff but it's TRON, not King Lear (and even King Lear is entertainment after all). It gets the feeling right, where the original showed a metaworld based on the look and feel of then cutting-edge games, the new ones shows how far we are from that era.
The characters are good, I'm glad they didn't bratify the protagonist, and Kevin Flynn is the Dude even in cyberspace. Then...

Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde

... Did I mention Olivia Wilde? Best reason to get zapped by digitizing laser, ever!

I liked the fact that this is a movie for fans: it has many quotes (the recorded message in the armoury before the games arena is the Sark speech to the conscripts in the original movie, verbatim) and references to both the first TRON and other pop culture icons (Star Wars) that fans and geeks will enjoy but newcomers will miss. The music is awesome, I was a little so-and-so about Daft Punk scoring it but they happen to be fans of the original movie as well and the soundtrack is simply great. Glad to see they managed to squeeze a Journey song (Separate Ways) in as well.

There will always be some disappointment because we've been waiting 28 years but it was worth it. Had Lucas made a Phantom Menace of this level, this would be a better world indeed, Kosinsky is definitely someone to watch.

And yes about "Creatives"... Users are called that in the original movie as well, in the Italian dub. Seen it at the movies in 1982. Seeing the original arcade cabinet which ate a lot of my cash at the time gave me a warm fuzzy feeling as well.

What was wrong with CLU?

...it was a bit disappointing to watch it at IMAX when almost none of the scenes seem to be 3D anyway...
Agreed. Given how much of the world was computer-generated I was expecting some more real 3D. I would've been just as happy watching it in IMAX without 3d, and I don't think much would've been missed.

The CLU CGI is the most rubbery piece of CGI I have ever seen, and they unfortunately have far too many shots with CLU and Kevin Flynn in the same shot which makes it show a lot. And don't try arguing "He's digital, he supposed to look like that."

Yeah, but...he's digital, he's supposed to look like that.

(Sorry, couldn't resist :P)

Seriously, though, I really liked the movie! [Olivia Wilde, anyone?]

As for CLU, I thought they did a pretty good job on him. By that I mean seeing him didn't distract me into thinking, "That doesn't look right." Of course, that opinion is in the eye of the beholder. :tiphat:

I didn't notice it at all. I guess it's probably because he's digital, he's supposed to look like that.

I had no problem with the age regressed Flynn effects. The fact that he was supposed to be a virtual person created in a virtual computer world actually made it fit well.

I absolutely loved the first one. Perhaps it was just seeing graphics like that back in the 80's, but the original one had a novel storyline to it. This is just re-hashed and recycled bits.

I felt like *I* had A.D.D. after watching this. I did not think it was worth my time.

If I wanted to be dazzeled by CGI effects and 'digitised' characters I'll watch the new Tron, otherwise I'm satisfied to have watched the original movie which was excellent with its gritty, techno-mystery feel. Ominous hovering capital ship stalking the protagonists, anyone?

As far as remakes go I usually never get satisfied with the rehashed versions - I'd rather read the book to see what the big deal about the plot is.

For regressed age effects, Final Fantasy had been specialising in pretty digitised persons for a very long while now :)

I liked Tron Legacy and after watching it I wanted to see the original but I wasn't sure about it until I saw this:
:)
