The hacker from Romania, who hacked the British MoD a few months ago, has now hacked about a dozen FTP servers of ESA, making ESA shutdown all their FTP servers for security upgrades.

Neither mission critical computers, nor the ESA website is affected by the hack, also the internal ESA network was not compromised, it only hit a number of the many FTP servers that are used in ESA for exchanging science data with external research institutions. The hack mostly targeted servers at ESRIN, also it looks like the servers had been really pretty sloppily set up. Scientists, as you know them.
Luckily, it was Tinkode. As it as already remarked after the MoD hack, somebody with more criminal energy could have used the servers easily for spreading malware.
