Speed isn't mobility. A battleship needs to do maneuvering to get into a good firing position and evade fire. You can't do that with a carrier, which is operating in a huge task force formation - the protection by the large task force comes at the price of limited mobility for the carrier to move independently or change course rapidly.
It could just run...there's always that. Just like camping, it's a legitimate strategy.
