A bit about myself? :hmm:

Well, I'm kinda hiding out here a bit. I'm an IL-2 Sturmovik fan, and kinda promised to finish a Korean War campaign I was building over at the M4T and SAS forums, and... truth be told, I got to a point where I just needed a bit of a break. I stumbled over Orbiter 2010, tried a few tutorials, and now I'm hooked. I will go back and finish the campaign soon, truly, but 'ssshhh' in the meanwhile. :hide:

I also dig FreeFalcon, but hardly get time to play any more; I have LOMAC unused on my hard-drive; and I like the look of Strike Fighters 2 (a lot!) especially the RNZAF Skyhawks you can download: the (real) Ohakea Skyhawks and Strikemasters used to practice 'touch and goes' at the local civvie airport where I grew up: I used to watch 'em from my bedroom window when I was a kid. I'm a big kid now, BTW.

If I just want to kick back and zone out, I'll fire up a skirmish in Company of Heroes. And I dig punting souped-up old Ford Escorts around Manfield (the racing circuit where I grew up) in GT Legends. So, that's my simming life in a nutshell.

As far as being a budding Orbinaut? Well, I really dug reading Sagan's Cosmos and Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe and Fabric of the Cosmos. Einstein is one of my uber-heroes, and I really liked Michio Kaku's Einstein's Cosmos too, which is just a lovely tribute to Einstein's life. The Cosmic Professor is another lovely 'Einstein' book I really enjoy reading to my kids. Newton and Kepler knew a thing or two as well, I should mention. I also luv Astronomy Cast by Fraser and Pamela. Neil deGrasse Tyson is another fave astrophysics personality.

I was a Star Wars kid (rather than Star Trek) but these days I luv nothing better than cosying up on the couch with my boys and catching Doctor Who. Did you see Big Bang? How great was that!? I liked the new BattleStar Galactica a lot - until the writers and producers really porked the ending. Never mind. Starbuck kicked butt! Edward James Olmos and Michael Hogan too.

My two boys are coming up seven and nine now, and I adore them to bits.

My wife prefers to be known as The Princess or She Who Must Be Obeyed. You don't want to mess with her.

I really am a motor mechanic by trade (although I have a cushy office job now, still in the trade but) and it's learning orbital mechanics that smokes my tires as far as Orbiter is concerned - it grows pretty naturally out of my interest in military flying and cosmology I think.

One day, one day... I fancy writing a sci-fi novel and retiring filthy rich. In the meanwhile though, I don't mind hangin' out with the rest of you peasants.

I'm a very proud Kiwi, natch, and a big fan of the All Blacks and New Zealand Maori rugby sides, and the Black Caps national cricket team (especially the McCullum brothers). I should be a Blues fan too, but that's hard work. What else... oh, I'm a Muhummad Ali fan too. And Megan Fox.

So that's a bit about me...

Thanx for reading, I'm feeling quite at home already!

Cheers

Thanx Tex. And thanx for running a super forum. I'm already finding the recommended add-ons and tutorials links really helpful, and FireBalls and Izack have welcomed me on board too.

Cool!

hi

Hi.
I am new to this forum, but not to Orbiter itself.
My name is Alexandru Cãlin.
I am from Romania.
I love Physics, Chemistry (4th at a national Phys+Chem contest) and Astronomy.
I have medium knowledges of the Python and Assembly programming languages, and I am a beginner Perl and Lua programmer.

A few days ago, I tried for the Nth time to fly to the Moon again in Orbiter, and I succeded.
I am using Orbiter much more than before (~1-4 hours/day, flying everywhere), considering that the last time I used it was in January or so.

Congratulations! Too bad that scientific achievements are valued significantly lower than sport achievements etc.

And a howdy :tiphat:

I just came back from my first day of college. This is so epic, no more crappy school assignments, classes are much shorter, and I don't have as many of them, and it's all paid for by the state. My physics book alone is over $250...

What sucks is once you finish university, you'll figure out you're done with analytical approach...

You'll also figure out differential equations can be split into two groups: The ones you can solve and the ones you find in reality...

Hi guys (and girls, if any)

My name is Duus, I am quite old (>50) and quite new to Orbiter. I did a few trips to the moon and back with the old Delta Glider a few years ago, but then my old computer selfdestructed and I lost all my software , and somehow I forgot all about Orbiter.

But some weeks ago I rediscovered this magnificent piece of software, and thought I would give it another go. And then I found the Delta Glider IV, and the Arrow Freighter, and now I am totally addicted.

My ambition is to be able to plan and execute a round trip to all planets/moons/asteroids/sattelites/space junk etc., all in one go. To be able to do so I have planned an incremental educational schedule for myself, with the following preliminary milestones:

I must be able to:
1. Take-off from Earth (any space port) and dock with any and all existing space stations in LEO.
2. Undock from any space port and land on Earth (on any and all space ports (well, at least those I have found hi res tiles for :)))
3. Transfer and land on the Moon (any spaceport)
4. Transfer to the Moon and dock to the Wheel.
5. Take off from the Moon (from any space port, and from the Wheel), transfer to Earth, and land (on any and all space ports).
6. Fly from the Earth to the Moon, land there, then fly back and land on Earth
6. Transfer from LEO to Mars
7. Transfer from Mars to LEO.
8. to ??. Fly to the rest of the planets and back to Earth, visiting their moons, trying to land on some of them for low gravity practice, utilizing sling shots etc.
Finally: Visit all planets in one big round trip, if possible (Space tankers allowed)

So far I have advanced to stage 5; as I am writing this my DGIV is on its way from Brighton Beach to Wideawake.

I am still not very good at re-entry and landing, not even with DGIVs autopilot on, so I am giving myself extra lessons in this crucial discipline. (I am progressing, now I can get the DGIV down in one piece and with surviving crew almost every time, by crash landing in some ocean or desert or somewhere, or I can get get it down on any runway of my choosing, but unfortunately never in one piece, then).

I am mostly using the standard tools for now, as I believe that advanced tools like TransX and IMFD is of no value to me before I can visualize what they are actually doing. And I don't really need them, the Orbit, Align, Sync and Transfer MFDs seems to do the job for me. So far.

I would like here to thank dr. Martin Schweiger :hail:who has made all this possible, and DanSteph :hail:for his fantastic DeltaGliderIV etc. Also a big thanks to Tex :tiphat:, whose docking tutorial not only taught me how to dock, but also gave my self-confidence quite a boost when I needed it most (it is very soothing for a newbie to realize that veterans also sometimes forget to open the nose cone ). And thanks a lot to all you add-on artists out there, you have made the Orbiter experience richer.

Okay, I guess this must do as an introduction to myself. I have some questions though, so I shall now transfer to the 'questions from newbies' page. Engine burn!

:cheers:cheers von Duus

Welcome ! Seems you have a clear and well-planned schedule

For more advanced steps, you could try slingshots and other aerobraking manoeuvers :p

Hi, i am Robert

I am Roberto Gardi
I was born in 1974, in Italy and in Italy i live and work.

I am aerospace Engineer, I have also a PhD in aerospace technologies and i work in the Italian aerospace research centre CIRA, in the in flight experimentation group.

It is clear that all this is not enough to fulfill my need for space, so i like science fiction and i LOVE orbiter.

Actualy i am struggling to deorbit and land the STS orbiter correctly.

Best regards.

Hello everyone! My compliments on the wonderful program and forum you have here. I've been hearing about the software for years and only recently actually have gotten around to downloading it.

I am a research engineer in aerospace propulsion systems. This appears to be a good outlet for my "serious play" ideas. Looking forward to interacting with you.

Greetings! (Again.)

My name is John Wilson, but everyone calls me by my stage name, Jonny B. I'm an old school Orbiteer, back from the beyond now that I have a new lappy and learning all over again. Back in the day (about three years ago), when we were just experimenting with realistic aerodynamic flight, I was known as MrBatman, author of some add-ons (Edwards AFB textures, Eagle 5 Winnebago, others) and test pilot for the shuttle fleet and some of the early aircraft here. I still go by the callsign "Batman" when I play flight sims.

So, about me. I'll be 50 this month, and I live in Lancaster, CA, fairly near AF Plant 42. Son of an air traffic controller from the Los Angeles Regional Air Traffic Control Center in Palmdale, so I grew up around aerospace.

I'm a website developer by trade; taught myself the needed skills about 15 years ago when I got bored of network tech support (another self-taught profession). By night, I'm a "karaoke whore", a blues and swing musician and play a mean blues harp; I occasionally play in a few bands around town.

I'm also a steampunk/dieselpunk, on the staff at Dieselpunks.org, and active in the Army of Toy Soldiers, the fan club of steampunk/industrial musician, entertainer, philosopher and future world emperor Dr. Steel (check out his website to find out more!). I'm the head of the over 35 division (which I started), the executive officer of the Southern Californian "Fibonacci" Division (#1123), and also started and am the head of the "special ops" division for aerospace afficionados, the Air Corps Elite for Steel (ACES). Hence the title, "Sky Marshal." (My full "steampunk" title is Sky Marshal Dr. Jonathan Baines "Jonny B." Goode III) And yes, you better believe I pimp Orbiter there.
