Rant Summer is hell!!!

Very unfortunate, very tragic. My grandmother lives in Horsham, which was almost surrounded by fire. Thank god the wind didn't play against them...

Really bad, At least no deaths in the floods in North Queensland yet.(Half the state is flood declared(That is about the size of NSW))

Current Toll in Fires:
130 Confirmed Dead, it looks like it will rise to over 200.

Worst natural disater in Australia so far.

These are some nasty fires. On thursday - saturday the sky around my house was completely smoke covered, and I've been able to smell it occasionally since then.

173 confirmed dead so far.

My heart goes out to all the people who lost friends or family, and all the people who still don't know if others survived or not.

Meanwhile, the today's temperature forecast for Siberia is:

(my home town is at -35 deg isotherm)

This world is full of contrasts.

Looking at that picture, I finally understand why nomads in the far north of Siberia actually travel north to prepare for the winter.

Back to the main subject: the situation in Australia seems to be really serious. Are all Australian forum members (and friends & family) still OK?

I once tried to find out at which temperature hot water starts to hurt, and it started to hurt at 50 degrees Celsius. I can hardly imagine what it is to live with an air temperature close to that.

I am fine.

For a change the weather is nice and pleasant(I happen to be dead centre to thee Fires and Floods). Though my TV is ruined (do you really need a one hour news special on every channel for a week)

I believe the heat down in Vic is Dry heat, you can get away from that easily, When it is humid too, that is a killer.

Water is a bit more uncomfortable than dry air, You can deal for short times with air temperatures far above 90°C, but it is not something you can take for hours. you can work at temperatures of 50°C, if you are used to it and have a good circulatory system. But if you don't and maybe also fail to drink enough (together with salts and minerals, which you also loose quickly by sweating), you risk your life.

I have heard that many fires are caused by arson and that they now search for the criminals with special forensic teams, but I don't think this will improve the situation... the fires could also have started just by thrown away bottles or other pieces of glass. Or other "natural" events.

Just like a cartoonist once defined:

Wow, England grinds to a halt with a bit of snow & -4.

The other day here's it was -3, and it was so cold that it actually hurt.

I simply can't imagine those temperatures.

When it's -30 and below, your snots start to freeze right inside your nose. So you go around breathing with your lower lip stretched forward to keep your own nose warm. :)

Also, your clothes make rustling sounds and this mixes with the crunch of snow under your feet. At -40 I often notices strange silent whispering sound coming like if from all directions. I don't know what's this.

A non-greased skin will hurt, of course, especially if there's any wind. It's necessary not to ignore this by large, because ear laps, nose tip and fingers are what usually gets freeze burnt first. Wearing a fur hat is a must, or you may get a brain membrane fever which might cause meningitis.

It's best to eat an energy rich food and have a hot drink before going outside.

Possibly the human hearing system reacting to the intense cold?

Where I live weather is crazy just about 2 weeks it was unusually cold and now its unusually warm. Its like 60 F right now we turnd of our coal sove for the first time this winter.

It was about 30 degrees when I was waiting for the bus this morning. Winter seems to be ending rather quickly. I'll probably be happy about it, until there's a cranefly buzzing around my bedroom:(

Two weeks ago it was 20 degrees for a low in Florida were I live.
Now its in the Mid-80's with no cold front in sight.
Florida's weather: from the bitter cold to the harsh spring and Hellish summer.

Right now outside in the DC area it's 70 F outside. Amazing. Just hours ago it was below freezing.

...

It's like walking into a blast furnace! The air dries you out and it's hard to function.

And now a bit of news from down here in Victoria.

The temperature was in the mid 20s last week, which was a pleasant change, and yes, most of the heat was dry heat, making it a lot more bearable. So far over 1800 homes have been confirmed destroyed, but the official death toll is still only 181.
