(I've actually found a rather remarkable answer to this old riddle. If you look at this post closely, I've already told you the answer).

Something to do with asterisks? The vernal equinox is coming up in about six hours - does that make people go crazy too? Maybe you should try using your other hand to balance an egg on its end. What an odd thread...

Have you *tried* clapping with one hand?
 
It's quite similar to the sound of two hands clapping, just you can't get it as sharp. This is assuming that there is only a single hand involved in the process of clapping, and that it isn't taking advantage of a grammatical technicality in any way.
