Internet and phone communications between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have been seriously disrupted after submarine cables were severed.

Correct. I got email notification of new messages, but following the link led only to "cannot find server" errors. Took the links home (different service) and had no trouble connecting.

The net has mostly been fine here. It was seriously affected last time there was a cable cut earlier this year.

Things like that are quite surprising when one thinks about it, Amazing how fragile the internet we all cherish can be. We aren't trully into the wireless age yet:download:.

Recently there was a program on local tv about coastal geography, and showed the cable-end arrival point from Gibraltar, part of the old Empire telegraph link. Just a concrete hut on the beach.
Strange to think that was a physical link to another part of the continent.
