"Scorch" seems like a rather unfortunate name for a Shuttle commander. Do you know how he got that monicker?

He was asked by the media around the time of STS-118 but he declined to answer. I don't know whether he was embarrassed or preferred the mystery. According to Wikipedia it may have something to do with his Harrier days. More here:
