A number of animatable meshes could be enough, having different levels of detail could be nice to have.

Raising the thing by its arms is going to be really tough...

I am not sure - will it? Essentially its just a modification of the touchdown points...

Coordinated with an animation. It's not as simple as it sounds once you start playing with the darn things, especially since there should also be a CoG-shift going on at the same time...

Well, the important trick is to not accelerate the touchdown points faster than local gravity in 2010P1, would need to test it in 2016

Not sure touchdown points would need to be changed. not sure on a size?

If it is wide enough for fitting into a ISO twenty foot container, its fine for me: 2.343 m wide. A UCGO box sized version could also be nice.

Ok still might need to do some textures. She is 2.28 meters wide.

Can you flip the right drum in the picture so that the scoops move outward at the bottom?

Looks like the skunkworks lab at KSC. I was up there at the red railing in the background a few years ago, but I was not allowed to take pictures :(.

Like this:

I may need to reduce the scale so that when the arms are extended up it will fit a square UCGO crate

No.... I meant it differently... from the perspective in the picture, the left drum should rotate clockwise when digging, and the right drum should rotate counter-clockwise.

Like this:

No, rather inverse. The bottom side of both drums rotates outward, away from the vehicle. In your current case, they rotate inward there.

So far got the drums to rotate and the arms to rotate.
Got to think about how to rotate the body. Right now I have the Arms as parents

I would make the arms child and keep the center body of the vehicle as parent... after all, that is how you see it most of the time and you can only have one parent.

I made the front body the parent. then the front arm is a child and parent. so the drums get carried along.

And I guess the same for the rear except they use the same parts that may be an issue?

Should be no issue.
