So I'm playing KSP, and I'd like to recover some hardware that was not built with return in mind. So I put together a parachute rig that can dock with a spacecraft in orbit, make a deorbit burn, and deploy a 10m inflatable heat shield at the back to make sure that we have enough drag high up that the lack of a heat shield on the front (where the payload is) doesn't cause parts to overheat when we get down lower.
I do a test flight with a load of uranium for density to make sure that a heavy payload can be recovered without having to deal with too bulky of a payload on my test launch. Launch goes well, reentry goes well, and at 16000 meters I separate the heat shield so that the parachutes on the main rig have space to deploy. The heat shield is almost a parachute on its own, so it goes flying off the back, and the main rig starts accelerating downwards again. Then I notice that I'm getting to an uncomfortable fraction of mach 1. The chutes half-deploy and I'm still picking up speed. I pass Mach 1 with the ground approaching fast, and I'm sure I'll lose the spacecraft. The chutes full deploy, and miraculously, despite the somewhat flimsy attachment of the chutes, the spacecraft screeches to a halt with room above the terrain to spare. But the uranium dummy payload separates and hits the ground, as far as I can tell, still going full-speed.
