God, I just found out in the history of the worst years of my country (decades of the mid-70's and early 80's) that the military government tried to develop a nuclear program. In fact I do not understand how we have not blown up.
It seems that, to stop the development of military nuclear program, the civil government attacked with the worst weapon of national origin, the most terrible of all, able to eliminate any government: inflation.

Kinda strange dream I had.

It started with some angry mob trying to lynch woman for parking her bicycle in the wrong spot, when aliens attacked (with fighters, bombers and massive motherships). They continued to wreac havoc during the night with small attacks but at the same time they induced fast sea level rising (you could see it happening). During the day they employ T-Rex like creaures (with back armour) to hunt down humans. Rest of the dream was trying to secure my family in high ground, arguing with the police that we still have 1 meter of water below the bridge and it should be opened for people to escape. Then we were avoiding T-rexes (they hunted outside city) and shooting down alien craft with microwave projectors (you needed to plug it into the socket and it was made out of the microwave oven).

I think ID4, Jurrasic Park, Deadly Tide and MacGyver melded in my mind into single thing.

After two pub evenings I needed one day rest.

-7F / -22C tonight. Some hot cocoa and apple pie will be going down for dessert tonight.

Seven below is the kind of weather I haven't experienced since I was about 6 and living in Maine. I don't remember what it felt like, but my brother lives in Wisconsin, and -20 F is typical of winters there. So I asked him, and he said "It's the kind of cold that makes your face hurt."

I once walked a few kilometers home on New Year, light wind and -25°C... was already painful enough, I called a taxi then for the remaining 6 km (after waiting at a friends home for 2 hours for getting a taxi called). -15°C is really a huge difference in comparison. But still, I think wet +/-0°C hurt more.

But its really true: Without weather, we would have invented it to have something to talk about.

Only two?

Back in my day...!

....your ship got banned from entering port again in the following three months to rebuild all pubs within 10 miles from the port?

(There are still local legends getting told about a Kiel week and a visiting US battleship crew having a field day...)

Hmm a BB visiting Kiel? That'd be Baltops '88 maybe. Certainly the Iowa, and just barely before my time.

I've been there, but much later (and on a FFG) in '93. Didn't care for the FFG-7 class ship much. But the chow lines were shorter (ships company was 220 and 20 of us were Airedales).

But yeah, the drinking ability of a sailor (regardless of nationality) should be legendary. There was this one time in Singapore...

Possible, one version of the story mentions the Iowa, but that also involved a major brawl breaking out in one tavern that eventually resulted in a wild night for the MP and the local citizens (Including nearly all crew members of a BB fighting together against the MP, while the German police decided to call this an internal US Navy affair).

But there are no written reports about such an incident with the Iowa visiting Kiel.

It's not bad when it is that cold if it is clear and calm. The air is very dry and so it is much easier for clothing to do its job and for heaters to warm up the air. We had wind chills down below -35F, so exposed flesh is a bad idea for long periods, so everybody looks like a ninja Eskimo, but outside of that it's surprisingly not bad.

I find that when the weather is around freezing and rainy that I find it hard to keep warm. We get a lot of that sort of weather in the late fall and early spring.

You should see it when my academy's training ship disgorges 600 college-aged cadets into Caribbean ports where the rum is cheaper than the Coca Cola and the drinking age is something like 5 years old. The only blessing is that their alcohol tolerance is so low that they are usually under the table by 8pm or so. That's when the faculty and engineers head out into town so they can drink in peace.

Our cadets aren't allowed to rent scooters or mopeds in port. Apparently years ago they went into a port that had ridiculously cheap daily scooter rentals and a long, tall pier. The kids plunked down their change, grabbed a moped, tore around the island, and ended with a high-speed Evel Knievel jump off the end of the pier. They'd then swim back, rent another, and repeat the process. After a while the renters started wondering why their mopeds weren't being returned and found that they were piled in an artificial reef at the end of the pier.

Let me guess: mostly males?

Back in my day...!

Keep in mind I'm from Poland. For me pub evening is ~5 beers + 250ml of vodka or equivalent. If you wanna try, poke me when you're in Europe.

Disclamer: High alcohol tolerance is not a good thing. BTW - it wasn't a chalenge but invitation :P

My favorite story happened on a training cruise a couple of years ago. I wasn't on the particular cruise, but I knew the cadet, really funny kid.

Said cadet was returning to the ship in time for his curfew. He had a few beers but was otherwise under control. We have a tiki hut at the end of the gangway where you check in with the watch to get back on the ship. He checks in, and starts up the gangway, but is stopped by the watch.

"You can't bring that chicken on board" they said. Sure enough, tucked under his arm is a live, clucking chicken.

Now, when the ship is underway, a lot of the cadets fish using handlines off the fantail, and if they catch something, they can bring it to the ship mess and the stewards will prepare it for dinner. It's an accepted tradition on the ship.

So the cadet responds to the watch, "I caught this chicken and was going to bring it to the mess for dinner tomorrow night." This caught the watch cadets short - sounded legit, and before they could protest the cadet walked up the gangway with his live chicken.

Meanwhile, in the engine room, since they're in port, they have a short staff on watch. Some of the old timer engineers take this watch because it is easy and quiet. The engine room is 5 stories of pipes, cables, steam lines, valves, etc...rather hot and noisy.

The hot and noisy engine room can be rather upsetting to chickens.

One of the watch engineers, making his rounds, comes face to face with a rather freaked out chicken that had been released by our prankster. It is flapping and running all over the place, generally causing mayhem.

So the engine room watch engineers get up and start chasing the chicken, finally corralling it between the boilers and trapping it in a locker. The fate of the chicken is unknown but I believe it was released.

The event was commemorated thus:

Lemme guess... you'd rather have the Redshirts as your tactical team... They may die, but at least they hit something?
