Those LCS things are just plain hideous. They look like something that got rejected for a James Bond movie's villain's yacht.

And the silly "freedom" naming, gag me with a spoon. They should name one of them "'Murka" and paint a giant bald eagle on the bow with a picture of Chuck Norris on the side, and get Mountain Dew to sponsor it.

The Coast Guard cutter, at least looks like a realistic ship. Kudos to the Puddle Pirates for keeping it real.

Last time I read the US Navy is getting a 2nd batch of LCS as replacement of the old FFGs...I really wonder if they can be used like those Oliver Perry class. I mean, they doesn't look like ships that can withstand attacks in the case of a 21st century Falklands War.... :uhh:

To be fair, the LCS can deploy a batch of Marines that a Perry class can't. Although I'll have a soft spot for FFG-41, they were getting on in years, and the LCS was a decent replacement.

The US is weird...

Had to show my ID at a Smoke Shop today, and got a free lighter because the lady behind the counter thought I was military. Short answer? Nope.
Long answer? They're incapable of defending themselves from a moderate, let alone serious, aerial attack. Combined with the fact that the U.S. Navy insists on keeping the modularity concept, despite the fact that 1, it doesn't work, 2, it costs MORE to build them that way, and 3, it makes the ships less effective.

Seriously, we need to oust everyone involved in DOD acquisitions. They're all idiots, and it'll be easier to do that than to clean out Congress... :dry:

Well, it is not the job of the LCS to survive that. The LCS are made for doing all those jobs, that would be a waste for sending a DDG or even a proper FFG (Not the Helen Keller class FFGs), because you want those for the more difficult jobs.

The LCS are looking like toys because they are meant to be that - no highly optimized warship, but rather a fast armed carrier for mission modules. They are designed for doing all those jobs that you won't use a proper warship for. The LCS are not even comparing well to modern corvettes but are cheap enough for the USA to have many of those available for gunboat diplomacy. For example hunting pirates, because the LCS are also very fast and agile.


Just compare a LCS to a modern German Braunschweig class corvette and you will notice what I mean.

Only half as fast as a LCS, only half as much displacement as a LCS, no helicopter hangar... more weapons than a baseline LCS.

The Braunschweig class costs $260 million per ship.
The LCS ships are $400 million to $450 million per ship.

But the corvette can only stay out of port for seven days. The LCS for 21 days.

That seems like a lot of money and effort for something so simple. In the time it would take to call the station and deploy it you could just walk up to the illegal operator and give the guy a ticket or arrest him or whatever the law calls for.

Also, this is Japan we're talking about, so I am disappointed the police drone doesn't look more like Voltron.

Well, first it has to shoot it with a minigun and use other, progressively more exotic weapons, all of which prove ineffective. Then it will finally pull out the ultimate weapon, some sort of lightsabre type sword thing, which it will use to cleave the offending quadcopter in two, saving Tokyo once again.

Also, the cops flying it must wear some sort of Power Ranger-looking helmets. Or at least dress in the space suits from the old Ultraman show.

Speaking of LCSs...the shiny new LCS-5, USS Milwaukee, had an "engineering casualty" and had to be towed into port for repairs 20 days after commissioning. :facepalm:

Some garbled information about metal filings in the lube oil system. I believe it is a CODAG system with twin screws, so I don't know what would cause a complete loss of propulsion like this, unless they had a main gearbox failure of some sort. It was either something not caught during sea trials (bad, very bad) or a flaw (bad, very bad).
