Humor Random Comments Thread

This is random comments, right? Good:

I got a new phone. Pre-loaded on this phone is some sort of NFL football app. It spams me with stupid news about the NFL. It updates itself. I don't even watch football. I dislike the NFL. I really hate having football shoved in my face using bandwidth I pay for. I resent the assumption that everyone likes NFL football. I finally figured out how to remove this app; problem solved for now.

I find the same thing with the NHL app even though I like hockey. For some reason they push notifications with idiotic clickbait articles when all I really need is scores. As hard as it may be to believe, I dont give a damn about Sidney Crosbys pet hamster giving birth.

I am still waiting for my new phone to ship to me... ordered a Nexus 6, after two months of decision process. In the end, the many recently discovered security problems in Android and the very slow updates by all manufacturers except Google/Motorola became the deciding point. Now I can also safely root my old phone and use it as backup toy.

That last android security breach was terrifying. I can barely stand the android devices that I use on a day to day basis now, the fragmentation problems it is having are brutal.

Yeah, but that is mostly a problem of the manufacturers, who underestimated the costs of their modifications. Samsung does more (and more unsafe) own software on their products, thus it also takes longer to make a new Samsung Android.

And yeah, the security problems are hard... but then, not too unsurprising. Other operating systems went through the same problems in the past 2 years.

So my wife just went to bed, I stayed up to play a bit, when suddenly the printer beside me jumps to life and starts spitting out paper. She was figuring out how to print stuff from her phone over WIFI. I start to wonder who the actual nerd is in this family...

Must be scary when you don't expect it

Well, at first I was in full 90ies mode, thinking "oh, an order probably got caught in the cache and the printer remembered it just now for some reason". Then I remembered what year it was, and the first thought was "wtf, that still happens??". Next I heard the bedroom door opening, and thought "oh great, now she's going to ask me what the hell I was doing while she's trying to sleep". Then I heard triumphant cackling through the half opened door and put one and one together.

Analogous, but not as funny.
My cousin worked in the oil industry, and often got work info on fax machines. Fair enough in the office, but he took one home and installed it in the lounge, handy he thought.
His 93 year old mother had a different opinion when this thing burst into life during her evening telly viewing...I think she's still in orbit.

N.

I've been looking for a good basic fast browser. I've been beating my head against Chrome and Firefox, hate them both. Bloat, bloat, bloat. Ugggh.

Just installed Pale Moon (www.palemoon.org), a open fork of Firefox pre-Australis that seems to be really lean and mean. Really snappy; I like it.

Does anyone know the calculation to figure out propellant flow rate for a rocket engine?

I only remember that some of its variables are specific impulse & thrust.

F = mdot * isp <---> mdot = F/isp.

F : Thrust (in N)
mdot: mass flow in kg/s
isp : specific impulse in Ns/kg

That is one of the reasons I went with a Windows Phone: essentially no preinstalled crapware and, should a carrier nonetheless choose to go wild with it, every app can be removed without rooting.

On the randomness: these days I dusted off FSX and the PMDG 737 NGX after about three years, went through the two tutorials and...I don't remember anything. As complicated as the A-10C, but in a different way.

Not too sure how to convert Ns/kg to m/s, but thanks!

Actually, its very simple.

[math]\frac{Ns}{kg} = N \cdot s \cdot {kg}^{-1} = \left ( {kg} \cdot m \cdot s^{-2} \right ) \cdot s \cdot {kg}^{-1}=\left ( {kg} \cdot {kg}^{-1} \right ) \cdot m \cdot \left ( s \cdot s^{-2} \right ) = m \cdot s^{-1} = \frac{m}{s}[/math]

m/s is just a short form of Ns/kg, which is the more accurate unit, since it is impulse (Ns) per mass (kg).

Random question of the day: why does seemingly every news outlet in the UK write "Nasa" instead of "NASA"?

I don't consider myself an introvert, but I can identify with a majority of those graphs.

I'm not sure I identify completely with being introvert or extrovert. I think most people are neither one or the other, but a mix. There are times I am on and times when I am off. I worry about people who freak out when they are alone without distraction, and I worry about people who freak out when they are with people and noise. But I think there is a balance with a wide latitude of normal between those extremes.

I think the real problem is certain portions of society don't get that sometimes people may need quiet and solitude and sometimes they may need people and interaction, and the timing and proportion really is up to the individual, and this is completely normal. When I have a long day and I really crave peace and quiet, maybe even cancelling plans to meet with friends, I hope they get that a) it's not about them and b) I don't have a social disorder, I just need some freakin' quiet.

Trying to find the basic dimensions of a BSS-702 satellite is proving to be fairly difficult. Why Boeing do dis?!
