Out of curiosity, what exactly does the forum server run on?

The server is the magnificent Grand Server of the Holy Probe.

Maybe they should have flown in a Navajo instead? Or an Aztec perhaps.

Ebola diagnosed in a patient in Dallas.
Going to avoid Facebook for a while.

Avoid? It may be the safest place to be for the next few months. I'm incredibly tempted to quit my job and not leave the house for a few months...

Worse, my parents, and quite a few people from my church, work for an organization that has a lot of staff that travel back and forth to Africa. So there are uncomfortably good odds that someone I know has come in contact with the patient, or even that the patient is someone I know. I haven't heard anything through those channels yet, though.

EHRMEHRGEHRD!!!

I'm betting more Americans will die due to heart failure caused by stressing over Ebola outbreaks, than the number of Americans that die from the virus itself...

Exactly. Also the chances to survive the virus are much higher in the western world, because you have better access to the necessary medical aid.

In Africa, even if you know that you have Ebola - it takes you important hours to get to the next hospital that is badly equipped for fighting haemorrhagic fever... and this disease can kill you in less than a day. And then, many don't even go to a hospital at all or travel with in groups that further spread the disease.

In the western world, especially if you have a doctor that realizes that this is no bad case of a flu, but Ebola, you have pretty good chances to survive this and be immune afterwards. Time is critical as well as good containment of the virus, the sooner you are isolated and treated properly, the better.

But that does not work in Africa right now.

You're probably billions of times more likely to die in a car crash than to even contract the virus.

Likely yes. And the seasonal flu epidemic is usually much more deadly in total numbers than Ebola.

The worst thing about Ebola is also its best thing: People die so fast that the disease needs very favourable conditions to spread at all. Such conditions exist in Africa, because there people do exactly those very stupid errors regarding even the possibility to start a new epidemic, because they have always done it that way.

The problem is just: In the past, such a epidemic killed a whole tribe and nobody talked much about it. It just happened like a freak accident. Today, there are much more people who travel much further distances and also follow stupid burial rites imported from Ebola-free Arabia.
